My PAN Name Doesn't Match My Passport - What Should I Do?

I recently noticed that my name on my Indian PAN card is not exactly the same as the name printed on my passport. The difference is small, but I’m concerned it could cause problems when I file my income tax return or complete banking and other financial formalities.

On my PAN, my middle name is missing, while my passport shows my full name. I’m not sure whether this is treated as a minor spelling or formatting difference or whether I need to submit a formal PAN correction request.

I also want to understand which document should be used as the basis for correcting the name. My passport has my current full name, but I have heard that PAN details may need to match other records too. Would a passport copy be enough, or could I be asked for additional documents?

I’m currently trying to avoid submitting the wrong application. I understand that I should not apply for a second PAN just because the name is incorrect, but I’m unsure about the correct correction process.

Has anyone dealt with a PAN and passport name mismatch? I would appreciate guidance on how to check the existing PAN details, which correction form to use, what supporting documents might be needed, and how to verify the corrected details afterward.

If the name difference is due to marriage or a legal name change rather than a missing middle name, would the process be different?

Thanks in advance for any practical suggestions.

I had a similar question when I was checking documents for an overseas financial transaction. The important thing is not to assume that every difference is treated the same way.

For example, a missing middle name might be different from a completely different surname or a name changed after marriage. If your passport reflects a legal name change, keep the relevant supporting evidence ready and check the current PAN correction instructions before applying.

If you are an NRI, I would also check whether the correction process has any specific requirements for your overseas address, identity documents, or submission method. Use the official UTIITSL or Protean eGov portal rather than an unofficial website or an old form downloaded from another source.

Once the corrected PAN details are available, check whether your income tax e-filing profile and financial records reflect the intended name. If there is a mismatch in a bank account or another institution's records, you may need to update those records separately.

I would not delay unnecessarily if the mismatch is affecting an important transaction, but I would make sure the supporting documents are correct before submitting the request.

One thing worth checking is whether the mismatch exists only on the printed PAN card or in the underlying PAN record as well.

If the card was printed incorrectly but the recorded details are correct, ask the authorised provider which service applies to your situation. If the actual PAN data is wrong, you will likely need to submit a correction request.

Before submitting anything, check these points:

    • Your name exactly as it appears in your passport.
    • Your name as recorded against your PAN.
    • Whether your first name, middle name, or surname is missing or misspelled.
    • Whether the change is due to marriage or a formal name change.
    • Whether the details on your other supporting documents are consistent.

Also, make sure you select the correct field to be corrected and complete all mandatory sections. The official PAN guidance says incomplete or deficient applications can be treated as invalid, so it is worth checking the form carefully before final submission.

After the correction is processed, verify the updated PAN details rather than assuming that submitting the request means the change has already taken effect. Keep the acknowledgement number and any communication about the application until the process is complete.

I would start by checking the exact name recorded against your PAN, rather than relying only on how the physical card looks. Compare the name in your PAN records with your passport, including spelling, middle name, surname order, initials, and spaces.

If your PAN already exists, the usual route is to request a correction to the existing PAN data. Do not apply for a new PAN just to fix the name difference.

The Income Tax Department currently lists PAN CR-01 as the correction form for individuals, effective under the 2026 rules. Applications can be submitted through the authorised PAN service providers, UTIITSL or Protean eGov, or at their PAN centres. You should follow the current instructions on the relevant portal.

For supporting documents, check the instructions for your specific correction. A passport may help establish your name, but whether it is sufficient depends on the type of change and the applicable document rules.

If the difference is simply a missing middle name, explain the discrepancy clearly and provide consistent evidence. If it involves a marriage-related surname change or a legal name change, you may need additional supporting documents. I would avoid assuming the same evidence applies to every case.
