I moved from India to the UK a few years ago and recently realised that the address associated with my PAN is still my old Indian residential address.
My PAN is already linked to my bank accounts, investments, and income-tax records, so I don't want to make any changes to the PAN number itself. I only want to update my address to reflect my current overseas residence.
I'm confused because there seem to be two different things online: updating the address in my Income Tax e-Filing profile and changing the address associated with the actual PAN record.
I don't need to change my name, date of birth, or PAN number. I just want my address records to be accurate while I'm living abroad.
I had the same confusion after moving to Australia.
I first updated my address and contact information in my Income Tax e-Filing profile. That was useful because the Income Tax Department says the profile can contain your address, email and mobile details, and recommends keeping it updated for communications and pre-filling.
But I wouldn't treat that as the same thing as a formal PAN data correction.
If your PAN card/database itself has an old address and you want that changed, use the applicable PAN update/correction facility provided by the authorised PAN service provider.
One other thing to watch is your jurisdictional AO/JAO. The Income Tax Department says that when a taxpayer's permanent or residential address moves between states, PAN migration to the appropriate AO may be required.
For an NRI moving from an Indian address to a foreign address, I'd verify the applicable jurisdiction procedure rather than assuming it will happen automatically.
Yes, but I'd first separate e-Filing profile address from PAN address.
The Income Tax Department's current My Profile facility allows a registered taxpayer to update contact information, including the address, through the e-Filing portal. The department also specifically says that an NRI without an Indian mobile number can receive OTPs on the email ID registered with the e-Filing portal.
However, I wouldn't assume that changing the address in My Profile automatically means the underlying PAN database has been changed.
If your objective is to change the address associated with your PAN itself, check the current PAN correction/update procedure rather than relying only on the e-Filing profile update.
Also, the current 2026 PAN rules recognise Non-resident as a residential-status option and require address details to include the country/region and other address components.
So living abroad doesn't automatically mean you have to keep an Indian residential address.

The important point is that you don't need a new PAN just because you changed your address.
Your PAN remains the same. You are updating information connected with that PAN.
Also, don't confuse this with Aadhaar-based Instant e-PAN. That service has a specific process and can update certain PAN details based on Aadhaar e-KYC, including address, but it requires the applicable Aadhaar/mobile setup.
For an NRI living abroad, especially someone who doesn't have an Aadhaar-linked Indian mobile number, the regular PAN update/correction route may be more relevant.
I'd keep copies of your passport, overseas address proof and existing PAN details ready if the applicable PAN correction process asks for supporting documents.
And make sure the foreign address is entered exactly as required by the current form rather than abbreviating it differently across documents.
