I’m an NRI and want to update my PAN details because my status has changed from resident to non-resident. I’ve also become an Australian citizen.
I already updated my residential status and citizenship details on the Income Tax e-Filing portal, but the changes don't seem to be reflected in the PAN database.
My PAN was issued around 25 years ago, and I don't have Aadhaar. I’m confused about which process I should use to update the PAN records.
Has anyone recently updated their PAN from resident to non-resident while living overseas? Can this be done completely online? What documents are required, and is Aadhaar mandatory for the correction?
I had a similar issue where my details were updated on the income-tax portal but the PAN records didn't immediately show the same information.
The important thing is to make sure the information submitted in the PAN correction application exactly matches your supporting documents. For an NRI, I'd also check the requirements for foreign address and citizenship documentation before submitting the correction.
You generally need to update the details through the PAN correction/update process, rather than relying only on the information shown on the Income Tax e-Filing portal.
Since you're an overseas citizen and don't have Aadhaar, check the current PAN application procedure for applicants who are not eligible for Aadhaar. Your foreign passport and overseas address documentation may be relevant.

If the PAN is very old, I would first check exactly which details are currently recorded against it. Then submit a PAN correction/update request for the required fields.
Not having Aadhaar doesn't necessarily mean you cannot maintain or update a PAN. However, the applicable process and document requirements depend on your circumstances, so I'd verify the current instructions rather than following an older PAN correction guide.
