I recently moved to Dubai for work and my Indian Bank savings account was converted to an NRO account after my residential status changed. I am trying to understand how much of the account I can manage from abroad without physically travelling to India.
For example, can I check my balance, transfer money, download statements and make regular payments through online or mobile banking while living overseas?
I am also concerned about things like KYC updates, changing my overseas address or mobile number, adding nominees and making other service requests. Do these normally require a visit to the Indian Bank branch?
I noticed that Indian Bank has an NRI customer onboarding portal, and it appears to support requests such as periodic KYC updation and conversion of a resident account to NRO through an online link.
Has anyone actually managed their Indian Bank NRO/NRE account from abroad for a long period without visiting India?
I would particularly like to hear from NRIs in the UAE, UK, USA or Canada. If you have used Indian Bank internet/mobile banking from overseas, were there any problems with OTPs, registered mobile numbers, KYC or transaction limits?
I manage most routine banking online, but I would separate day-to-day account operation from requests that involve KYC or changes to the account relationship.
Indian Bank's NRI portal specifically allows existing NRI customers to submit certain requests online. The bank says the portal can be used for KYC updates, resident-to-NRO conversion and updating email/mobile information.
For normal banking, Indian Bank also provides online customer services and account-statement facilities.
One thing I'd be careful about is the registered mobile number. If your Indian SIM stops working after moving abroad, OTP-based services can become inconvenient. I'd make sure the bank has the correct contact details before relying entirely on online banking.
Also keep copies of your passport, visa/residence permit, overseas address proof and tax/KYC documents. If the bank asks for updated documentation later, having everything ready makes the process easier.
In general, you don't necessarily have to visit India every time you need to manage an NRI account.
Indian Bank currently provides an NRI Customer On-Boarding Portal, and its stated purposes include periodic KYC updates, conversion of a resident account to NRO, grouping of accounts and updating registered email/mobile details.
For everyday banking, the important thing is to have your internet/mobile banking access working and your registered contact details up to date.
The bank also lists online services such as account statements and online Re-KYC facilities.
That said, I wouldn't assume that every request can be completed remotely. Some transactions or documentation issues can still require additional verification or branch involvement.
If you're moving abroad permanently, I'd update your overseas address, mobile number and email with the bank and make sure your NRO/NRE account status is correctly recorded before you leave.

Another option to consider is giving a Power of Attorney (POA) to someone in India for limited banking matters.
Indian Bank's deposit policy says operations by a Power of Attorney holder are subject to restrictions. For NRO accounts, the bank states that POA operations are restricted to permitted local rupee payments, remittance of current income to the account holder's account, or remittance to the account holder through normal banking channels.
So I wouldn't give someone a general assumption that they can operate the account exactly as the NRI account holder does.
For me, the practical approach would be:
Online/mobile banking → routine transactions
NRI portal → eligible service/KYC requests
POA → specific matters that genuinely need someone in India
Branch visit → only where the bank specifically requires physical verification or documentation
The exact process can change depending on the service, so I'd confirm with Indian Bank before authorising someone else to operate the account.
