Aadhaar Card for NRIs: Can NRIs Apply and What Documents Are Needed?

I’m an Indian citizen living in the UK and have been an NRI for several years. I recently started looking into getting an Aadhaar card for NRIs because I still have financial and property-related matters in India.

I already have a PAN and an Indian passport, but I never enrolled for Aadhaar when I was living in India. Now I'm confused about whether NRIs are actually eligible to apply for Aadhaar or whether Aadhaar is only available to people who are residents of India.

I’ve found different information online. Some people say NRIs can enrol using their Indian passport, while others say you need to have lived in India for 182 days before applying.

I’m also confused because I understand that Aadhaar is based on residency rather than citizenship, but there seem to be special rules for NRI Aadhaar enrolment.

My main questions are:

  • Can an Indian citizen living abroad apply for Aadhaar?
  • Do I need to spend 182 days in India first?
  • Can I use my Indian passport as proof?
  • Do I need an Indian address?
  • Can an NRI update their Aadhaar details while visiting India?
  • Is an NRE/NRO bank account relevant to Aadhaar eligibility?

If anyone here has recently enrolled for Aadhaar as an NRI, especially using an Indian passport, I'd appreciate hearing what documents you submitted and how long the process took.

I’m mainly looking for recent experiences because Aadhaar rules and enrolment procedures seem to have changed over time.

I'm an NRI in Canada and had a similar question.

My understanding from UIDAI is that Indian citizens who are NRIs can enrol for Aadhaar if they have a valid Indian passport. UIDAI specifically says the 182-day residency condition is not applicable to NRI applicants.

However, I would distinguish between being eligible to enrol and actually completing the enrolment.

You still have to visit an Aadhaar enrolment centre and provide the required documents and biometrics. The passport is important because it establishes the applicant's identity and citizenship.

I also wouldn't assume that having an NRO account, Indian property or PAN automatically makes someone eligible. Those are separate things.

If you are planning a short trip to India specifically for Aadhaar, I'd check the current UIDAI requirements and locate an enrolment centre before travelling.

I think the 182-day point causes a lot of confusion.

UIDAI's general Aadhaar guidance says Aadhaar is available to residents, but there is specific guidance for NRIs with valid Indian passports. The UIDAI FAQ says an NRI can enrol for Aadhaar using a valid Indian passport and that the 182-day residency requirement does not apply to such NRI enrolment.

For documents, I'd follow the current UIDAI list rather than relying on someone's experience from several years ago.

There can also be a difference between new Aadhaar enrolment and updating an existing Aadhaar. If someone already has Aadhaar and later becomes an NRI, that's a different situation from an NRI who has never enrolled.

And remember that Aadhaar enrolment requires biometric information, so an NRI generally needs to be physically present at an enrolment centre.

I enrolled for Aadhaar while I was visiting India, although I was living in the US at the time.

The important thing I found was that NRI Aadhaar rules are different from the normal resident enrolment situation. UIDAI's current guidance says an NRI with a valid Indian passport can apply for Aadhaar and does not have to complete the usual 182-day residency requirement applicable to resident enrolment.

I took my Indian passport with me to the Aadhaar enrolment centre.

One thing I would check before going is whether the centre you plan to visit handles the type of enrolment you need. The process involves demographic information and biometrics, so it isn't something I could complete entirely online.

Also, I wouldn't rely on an old forum post saying that every NRI has to wait 182 days. UIDAI's current NRI guidance is the better reference.
