I’m an NRI and currently looking at different Indian banks for an NRE/NRO account. One of my main priorities is having reliable customer support from overseas.
For those who already bank with Indian banks, which ones have you found easier to deal with for NRI-related requests such as KYC updates, address changes, account conversion, fund transfers, and general account queries?
I’m particularly interested in:
I’m currently considering SBI, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, and Axis Bank, but would appreciate experiences from people who have actually used their NRI services.
I use HDFC for NRI banking. Their NRI service options cover things like account maintenance, KYC, address updates and NRE/NRO-related requests through different channels.
One thing to check before opening an account is whether the specific service you need can be completed digitally. HDFC's current service-channel information shows that some requests can be handled online, while others may require a branch or courier/mail process.
I’ve had a reasonably smooth experience with ICICI for NRI banking. They have dedicated NRI phone banking and several services can be handled through online banking or other digital channels. Their NRI phone banking is available 24/7.
For me, having a dedicated NRI support channel was useful because I didn’t have to depend on a particular branch in India for every request.

Axis is worth checking if international phone support is important to you. They have dedicated NRI phone banking, a dedicated NRI email channel and digital banking services. They also list country-specific international numbers for several regions.
SBI also has dedicated NRI customer-care numbers for several countries and Global NRI Centres for account servicing and onboarding.
I’d compare the support channels based on where you live rather than just choosing based on the bank's overall reputation.
