Form 16 is a TDS certificate issued to the employees of the company. It includes information on salary paid and Tax deduction at source under Section 192 of the Income Tax. It is issued to the employees from 16th June until the next financial year, which acts as proof of income tax paid. Form 16 is an important document to fill out the ITR as it includes some crucial information, PAN, TAN, deductions, and the total tax deposited with the government. On the other hand, Form 16A is a TDS certificate which includes details of the income other than salary, like professional fees, rent, and interests of the different sections of the Income Tax Act. This form is issued to the employers quarterly and includes information about the Deducted PAN, TAN, Amount paid, nature of payment, and deposited and deducted TDS with the government. Form 16A is important to verify the TDS information and ensure correct filing for your Income Tax Returns.
Besides salary and bank interest, I also worked as a freelance consultant for a few months.
One of my clients deducted TDS before making payments and later issued me Form 16A. So, based on my experience, Form 16A isn't limited to banks. It can also be issued when TDS is deducted on certain non-salary payments.
For salary income, I only received Form 16 from my employer.
I had the same confusion when I started filing my returns. In my case, Form 16 came from my employer because it related to TDS deducted on my salary.
The Form 16A I received was from my bank because tax had been deducted on the interest earned from my fixed deposits. When I filed my return, I referred to both documents because they covered different types of income.
I also matched the TDS details with Form 26AS before submitting my ITR. That helped me confirm everything had been reported correctly.

I agree with the previous replies. Last year, I had both forms while filing my tax return.
My employer issued Form 16 for salary, while the bank issued Form 16A for interest income. My tax consultant advised me to compare both documents with my Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Form 26AS before filing the return.
The details matched, so filing the ITR was straightforward. Since tax reporting rules can change, it's always a good idea to verify the latest guidance if you have multiple income sources.
