The Password for the Form 16 is the first five letters of your PAN and the date of birth in the DD/MM/YYYY format. Taxpayers will get their Form 16 passwords at their registered email address.

In my case, the password wasn't related to my PAN at all. It was generated according to my company's internal policy and was mentioned on the employee portal where I downloaded the Form 16.

That's why I wouldn't rely solely on information from forums or random websites. Different employers and payroll providers may use different security settings to protect PDF documents.

If you still can't open the file, your HR or payroll team should be able to tell you the correct password format.

My employer uses payroll software that protects all salary documents with a password. For my Form 16, the password was a combination of my PAN and date of birth in a specific format.

The instructions were included in a separate email that I initially overlooked. After finding that email, I was able to open the PDF without any problems.

Based on my experience, I'd first search your inbox for another message from HR or payroll before requesting a new copy.

I had the same issue a few months ago. In my company, the password was my PAN number in lowercase, without any spaces. Once I entered it exactly as instructed by HR, the PDF opened immediately.

I later found out that different payroll systems can use different password formats, so there isn't always a single standard. If the email doesn't mention the password, it's worth checking with your payroll or HR team before trying too many combinations.
