What is Fund Repatriation?

NRI funds repatriation means the transfer of funds from the NRI bank account to an Indian bank account or their residence country bank account. It includes both processes of sending money to an NRI in India, which is called an inward remittance and transferring money from India back to the NRI's foreign account, which is called an outward remittance.

      Here are the repatriation advantages for other accounts: 

      • You will get no restriction on holding the repatriation funds in these accounts. 
      • An NRI can easily convert their funds into Indian rupees while depositing and get them in the original currency. 
      • FCNR accounts and fixed deposits are denominated in foreign currency, meaning that funds can be held in a foreign bank account and you can withdraw in the same currency.

      Here is are list of bank accounts for the NRIs, which helps them to manage their financial operations. 

      • Non-Resident External (NRE) account: An NRE account is generally used for managing foreign earnings and provides full repatriation. It means if the funds are deposited in the NRE account, with interest earned, then it can be transferred back to the NRI's foreign account, without any limitations or restrictions.  The NRE account principal and interest are exempt from the Indian income tax.
      • Non-Resident Ordinary Account (NRO): Through the NRO, NRIs can manage their income generated in Indian, like interest, rental income, fixed deposits, or dividends from Indian companies. Deposits made in both Indian rupees and foreign currency. However, in an NRO account, you can only repatriate up to 1 million USD in a financial year, which is subject to the taxes applicable at 30%. Additionally, foreign currency can also be deposited in an NRO account, which can be fully repatriated without any tax implications.

      • Investment in equity through PIS: NRIs can invest directly in Indian stocks, like BSE, NSE, and the portfolio investment scheme. which are fully repatriated for both invested capital and capital gains. 
      • Mutual Funds: It includes a diverse range of mutual funds which are available to NRIs, which offer a fully repatriated return of their invested amount and capital gains. 
      • Government Securities: NRIs can invest in government bonds and treasury bills, which allows them to repatriate the full invested amount and capital gains along with the interest earned upon maturity.  
      • Different Investment options: NRI can also get various investment options, which are rupee-denominated and issued by Indian companies which are located in foreign markets and overseas direct investment (ODI) funds.
