I'm currently living in Australia and need to file my Indian Income Tax Return (ITR) this year. This is my second year filing as an NRI, and I'm a little confused about the last date for income tax filing for FY 2025–26 (AY 2026–27).
I have income from a rented property in India, along with interest from my NRO account. Last year, I filed well before the deadline, but this time I've seen different dates mentioned on various websites. Some say the due date is July 31, while others mention extensions in previous years, so I'm not sure what applies this year.
Is the last date the same for salaried individuals, NRIs, and people with rental income? Also, if someone misses the due date, can they still file a belated return, and are there any penalties or restrictions?
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has already checked the latest rules or filed their return. I know deadlines can change if the Income Tax Department issues a notification, so I'm looking for the most up-to-date information.
I usually don't wait until the last week. A couple of years ago I filed close to the deadline, and there was a mismatch in my TDS details that delayed the process.
Even if an extension is announced in some years, I never rely on it because those decisions are made separately and aren't guaranteed. It's much less stressful to complete the filing early if all your documents are ready.
I'm an NRI based in Canada and had the same question recently. From what I've checked, the due date for most individuals who don't require a tax audit is 15 September 2026 for Assessment Year 2026–27. This includes many salaried taxpayers and NRIs with straightforward tax situations.
I still plan to file earlier because it gives me enough time to fix any AIS or Form 26AS mismatches before the deadline.

One thing to keep in mind is that not everyone has the same due date. My business requires a tax audit, so my filing deadline is different from my brother's, who has only salary income.
If you're unsure which due date applies to you, it's worth checking your specific filing category. Requirements can vary depending on whether an audit is applicable or if you have other compliance obligations.
