I saw that the IRS opened the 2026 tax filing season on January 26, 2026, and I'm trying to understand what this means for people who need to file their 2025 federal income tax return.
This is my first year handling my US taxes without an employer-provided tax service, so I'm a little confused about the important dates. I have my W-2 and some 1099 forms, but I'm still waiting for one investment statement.
I know the federal tax deadline is April 15, 2026, but does the IRS opening date mean that everyone should file immediately? Or is it better to wait until all tax documents have been received?
I'm also curious whether anyone filed early this year and how long it took for the IRS to acknowledge the return. I plan to file electronically, but I don't want to submit an incomplete return and then have to correct it later.
For those who have already started preparing their 2025 return, are there any new changes worth paying attention to for the 2026 filing season?
I agree with waiting until your tax documents are complete. Filing early can be useful, but filing before receiving all your income information can create unnecessary problems.
If you have W-2 income plus investments, self-employment income, foreign accounts or other reporting requirements, your situation may be more complicated than a straightforward W-2 return.
I also wouldn't rely only on discussions in tax forums for questions about deductions or reporting requirements. The IRS publishes the current filing-season information and instructions, and those should be checked for the 2025 tax year.
For anyone filing for the first time, it may also be worth having a qualified tax professional review the return if there are unusual income sources or cross-border issues.
I'm in a similar situation. I received my W-2 early but had to wait for a brokerage 1099 before I could finish my return.
The April 15 deadline is the date I pay more attention to, but I prefer filing earlier when everything is ready. Filing electronically is also more convenient for me because I can track whether the IRS accepted the return.
One thing I learned is that “tax season opened” and “tax filing deadline” are two different things. The IRS opening date tells you when returns can start being submitted and processed. The deadline tells you when the return is generally due.
I'd also check the IRS website for current information because tax rules and filing procedures can change from one year to another.

I wouldn't rush to file just because the IRS has opened the filing season. I usually wait until I have received all of my W-2s, 1099s and other relevant tax documents.
The IRS opening date simply means it has started accepting and processing individual federal tax returns for the 2025 tax year. It doesn't mean everyone has to file on that exact date.
Last year I filed electronically once all my documents were available, and the confirmation came fairly quickly. The bigger issue for me was making sure the information on the return matched the documents reported to the IRS.
If you're still waiting for an investment statement, I'd make sure you receive it before submitting the return. Also keep an eye out for corrected 1099s because financial institutions sometimes issue updated forms.
