Is Form 15CA Required for Every Foreign Remittance?

I'm an NRI living in the USA and recently sold a property in India. After paying the applicable taxes, I'm planning to transfer the sale proceeds to my overseas bank account. My bank has asked about Form 15CA and Form 15CB, but now I'm confused because I've heard that these forms aren't required for every foreign remittance.

Some people have told me that Form 15CA is mandatory whenever money is sent outside India, while others say there are exemptions depending on the type of remittance and whether it's taxable.

Has anyone here recently remitted money from India? What documents did your bank ask for? Did you have to submit both Form 15CA and Form 15CB, or was Form 15CA alone enough?

I'm trying to understand whether the requirement depends on the purpose of the remittance. In my case, it's a one-time transfer of funds from my NRO account after selling property, but I may also need to transfer rental income in the future.

I know every case is different and tax rules may change, so I'm mainly looking for recent experiences before speaking with my CA.

I sold a flat in Bengaluru while living in Australia and repatriated part of the proceeds last year.

My bank asked me for Form 15CA, Form 15CB, proof of TDS, the sale deed, and my PAN details. My CA prepared the tax forms after verifying the tax calculations, and the bank accepted the remittance request.

One thing I learned is that different banks may have slightly different document checklists in addition to the statutory forms. I called the bank beforehand and requested their complete list, which saved me an extra visit.

My experience was different because the remittance wasn't related to property or rental income.

I sent funds abroad from my NRE account, and the bank didn't ask for Form 15CB. They only requested the standard remittance documents and explained that the documentation requirements depend on the nature of the transaction.

That's why I wouldn't assume every foreign remittance has exactly the same paperwork. It seems banks review the purpose of the remittance first before deciding what they need.

I transferred rental income from my NRO account to Canada earlier this year.

My bank asked for Form 15CA, a CA certificate in Form 15CB, copies of my PAN, passport, and documents showing that the taxes had been paid. The bank explained that because the remittance involved taxable income, they wanted both forms before processing it.

The paperwork took a little time, but once everything was submitted, the transfer was completed without any issues.
