I'm an NRI living in the United States and need to file my Income Tax Return (ITR) online for AY 2026–27 (FY 2025–26). Last year, my CA handled the filing, but this year my tax situation is fairly straightforward, so I'm thinking of filing the return myself through the Income Tax e-Filing Portal.
My income in India includes interest from my NRO account and rental income from a property in Hyderabad. I've already downloaded my Form 26AS, checked my AIS and TIS, and collected the rent statements. However, I'm not sure about the exact online filing process.
Could someone explain the steps for filing an ITR online for AY 2026–27? How do I know which ITR form I should choose, and what should I verify before submitting the return? Also, after filing, is e-verification mandatory, and how long does it usually take for the return to be processed?
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has recently completed the online filing. I know every taxpayer's situation is different, so I'm looking for general guidance based on your experience rather than professional tax advice.
I'm based in the UK and have been filing my own ITR for the last three years. One thing I'd recommend is confirming that you've selected the correct ITR form before entering any details.
I also downloaded the pre-filled data available on the portal and carefully checked it against my own records because not every income entry was automatically populated.
Take your time reviewing everything before clicking Submit. Correcting mistakes later is usually more time-consuming than spending a few extra minutes checking the return.
I filed my return online last week from Canada, and the process was fairly straightforward. After logging into the Income Tax e-Filing Portal, I selected AY 2026–27, chose the applicable ITR form, and completed the required sections.
Before submitting, I compared every income entry with AIS, Form 26AS, and my bank statements. That helped me catch a small TDS mismatch before filing.
After submission, I completed e-verification using Aadhaar OTP. My return was successfully verified within a few minutes.

I filed my return from Singapore this month. Besides checking AIS and Form 26AS, I also kept my bank interest certificates and rental income records handy while completing the return.
Once I submitted the return, I made sure to complete the e-verification the same day. From my understanding, simply submitting the return isn't enough—it also needs to be verified within the prescribed time limit for the filing process to be completed.
Requirements can change each assessment year, so I always read the latest instructions available on the official portal before starting.
