I'm currently living in the UK and trying to file my Indian Income Tax Return through the Income Tax e-Filing portal. While submitting my return, I ran into a technical issue and now I'm looking for the correct Income Tax Department customer care number.
When I searched online, I found several different phone numbers, and I'm not sure which one is meant for e-Filing queries. Some websites also list separate helpline numbers for PAN services, AIS, and TDS, so it's a bit confusing.
Has anyone recently contacted the Income Tax Department's customer support? Were you able to get your issue resolved over the phone, or did you have to raise an online grievance instead?
I'd also like to know whether the helpline is available for taxpayers calling from outside India and if there's usually a long waiting time. I'm hoping to resolve my issue before filing my return.
My issue was related to AIS, not the ITR itself.
Initially, I called the general helpline, but they directed me to the dedicated AIS support number because the problem involved my Annual Information Statement.
If you're unsure which department handles your issue, explain the problem first—they'll often tell you whether it needs the e-Filing team, AIS support, or another helpdesk.
I called the e-Filing helpline from Dubai a few weeks ago because my ITR wasn't getting verified.
I used the international support number instead of the toll-free number, and the executive was able to check my PAN details after verifying my identity. They also guided me through the e-verification process.
For portal-related issues, the e-Filing helpdesk is usually the correct place to start before raising a grievance online.

I contacted the Income Tax Department from Canada regarding a refund query.
The phone support helped me understand the processing status, but they also suggested raising an online grievance through the e-Filing portal because my case required document verification.
Based on my experience, calling the helpline is useful for general guidance, while account-specific issues sometimes require a ticket or grievance request.
