What happens if I don't file ITR for 2 years?

I'm hoping someone here has been in a similar situation because I'm getting a bit worried. I haven't filed my Income Tax Return (ITR) for the last two financial years in India. I'm currently living in Australia as an NRI, but I still have some income in India from a rental property and interest earned on my bank accounts.

During the first year, I assumed my TDS covered everything, so I didn't think filing was necessary. The following year, I was busy relocating and completely missed the deadline. Now I'm wondering if I've made a bigger mistake than I realized.

I've heard different things from different people. Some say I could receive notices from the Income Tax Department, while others say nothing happens if there isn't much tax due. I'm also unsure whether not filing for two years could create problems when applying for a loan, claiming a tax refund, or completing other financial paperwork in India.

Has anyone here filed ITR after missing two years? Were you able to regularize everything without too many complications? If you received a notice, what information did the department ask for?

I know every tax situation is different, but I'd really appreciate hearing real experiences from people who have dealt with this.

One thing I discovered is that missing ITR filing can have practical consequences beyond taxes.

When I applied for a home loan in India, the bank asked for my recent ITR acknowledgements. Since I hadn't filed for one of the years, it delayed my application until I could explain my financial records.

If you're planning to apply for loans, visas, or certain financial products, keeping your tax filings up to date can make the process much smoother. Of course, everyone's circumstances are different, so it's best to review your specific case carefully.

I had a different experience. I didn't file one return because my taxable income was below the basic exemption limit, but the following year I did have taxable income and forgot to file.

A few months later, I received a communication from the Income Tax Department asking me to review certain transactions reflected in my tax records. It wasn't a penalty notice, but it prompted me to organize my documents and seek professional advice.

If you've missed two years, I'd recommend checking your AIS, TIS, and Form 26AS first to understand what income has been reported against your PAN before taking th

I missed filing my ITR for two years while working in the UAE. In my case, I had TDS deducted from my rental income, so I assumed there wasn't anything else I needed to do.

Later, when I wanted to claim a refund, I realized I couldn't simply file those old returns because the filing window had already closed. I spoke with a chartered accountant who reviewed my case and explained what options were still available.

Fortunately, I didn't receive any notice, but I learned that just because TDS has been deducted doesn't always mean you can skip filing. Whether you're required to file depends on your income and other factors. If you think you were required to file, it's worth reviewing your records sooner rather than waiting.
