I'm an NRI living in the USA and need to file my Income Tax Return (ITR) for AY 2026-27 because I have rental income and bank interest in India. I have a valid PAN card, but I don't have an Aadhaar card since I've been living abroad for several years.
When I started filing my return on the Income Tax e-Filing portal, I wondered whether Aadhaar is mandatory for NRIs or whether I can complete the ITR filing using only my PAN.
Has anyone here filed an ITR recently as an NRI without Aadhaar? Did the portal allow you to submit the return without any issues? Also, how did you complete the verification process after filing?
I'd appreciate hearing about recent experiences before I proceed.
My suggestion is to plan before the financial year ends rather than at the time of filing. I review my investments, capital gains, and interest income with my tax advisor every year. Last year, I also claimed foreign tax relief by filing the required forms because I had already paid tax overseas. That made a noticeable difference.
I live in the UAE and earn rental income from India. Every year, I make sure to claim all eligible deductions related to the property, including the standard deduction available for house property income where applicable. I also keep all supporting documents ready because the Income Tax Department may ask for clarification later.

I'm an NRI in the UK, and one of the biggest tax savers for me has been checking whether I was eligible to claim benefits under the India–UK DTAA. I also claimed deductions that were available to NRIs instead of assuming they only applied to residents. My CA reviewed everything before filing, which helped avoid mistakes.
