I'm filing my Income Tax Return for AY 2026–27 and came across Section 80EEB of the Income Tax Act while checking deductions. I understand it's related to electric vehicles, but I'm not completely sure how it works.
I purchased an electric car with a bank loan a few years ago, and someone told me I might be eligible for a tax deduction on the interest paid. However, when I searched online, I found different explanations about who can claim it, the maximum deduction, and whether it's available under both the old and new tax regimes.
Can anyone explain what Section 80EEB is in simple terms? Does it apply only to electric cars, or are electric scooters and bikes covered too? Also, is the deduction available every year until the loan is repaid, or only for a limited period?
If you've claimed this deduction while filing your ITR, I'd appreciate knowing what documents you kept and whether the Income Tax Department asked for any additional proof later.
I understand tax rules can change, so I'm mainly looking for recent experiences from people who have actually claimed this deduction.
I financed an electric scooter, and my tax consultant confirmed that Section 80EEB isn't limited to electric cars. The important factors were that the vehicle qualified as an electric vehicle and the loan had been sanctioned within the prescribed dates.
One thing I learned was that many people confuse this deduction with home loan deductions. They're completely different sections of the Income Tax Act.
Also, if you're comparing the old and new tax regimes, make sure you check whether this deduction is available under the regime you choose before filing your return.
I claimed the Section 80EEB deduction while filing my return last year. My loan was sanctioned in 2022 for an electric car, so it fell within the eligible period.
The deduction is only for the interest paid on the loan, not the principal repayment. My bank provided an annual interest certificate, and I kept that along with the loan sanction letter in case I ever needed to verify my claim.
As far as I know, the deduction can be claimed each year as long as you're paying eligible interest and continue to satisfy the conditions. I wasn't asked to upload any additional documents when filing, but I kept all the records safely.

I nearly missed claiming this deduction because I assumed my regular loan statement was enough. Later, my lender issued a separate interest certificate, which made it much easier to calculate the amount eligible under Section 80EEB.
A friend of mine wasn't eligible because his EV loan was sanctioned after the deadline mentioned in the law. So the loan sanction date is just as important as the amount of interest you've paid.
Tax provisions can change, so I always verify the latest instructions on the Income Tax Department's website before submitting my return.
