SBI NRI Account: NRE vs NRO – Which Account Should NRIs Choose?

I recently moved to the UK and have started sorting out my Indian banking accounts. I was an Indian resident when I opened my SBI savings account, but after moving abroad permanently, I understand that I need to update my banking status.

I contacted SBI about converting my existing resident account and was told that NRE and NRO accounts are available for NRIs. This has left me with more questions than answers because I don't fully understand which account I actually need.

Most of my income now comes from my UK employment. I plan to send some of that money to India for investments and family expenses. At the same time, I have rental income from an apartment in Pune, so I also need an account for money earned in India.

From what I've read, an SBI NRE account seems suitable for money transferred from abroad, while an SBI NRO account seems to be used for Indian income. But I'm unclear about the practical differences.

For anyone using SBI NRI banking:

  • Do I need both an NRE and NRO account?
  • Can I convert my existing SBI resident savings account to NRO?
  • Can I transfer money from NRE to NRO?
  • Which account is better for fixed deposits?
  • Is interest on NRE accounts tax-free in India?
  • What happens to the interest earned in an NRO account?
  • Can I repatriate money from both accounts?
  • Does SBI require a separate account-opening process for NRE and NRO?

I'd especially appreciate experiences from NRIs in the UK who use SBI. I'm trying to set this up correctly before transferring a larger amount of money to India.

I use HDFC rather than SBI, but the NRE/NRO distinction is broadly the same, so I'll add one point.

If you have foreign salary + Indian rental income, having both accounts can make sense. Foreign salary/remittances generally go into NRE, while rent and other Indian-source income can go into NRO.

The tax treatment is also different. NRE interest can be exempt from Indian income tax when the relevant conditions are met, whereas NRO interest is generally taxable in India and may be subject to TDS.

Another thing to watch is KYC and FATCA/CRS information. When you become an NRI, the bank may need updated residency and tax information.

For your specific SBI account, I'd ask the bank exactly what they need to convert the old resident account to NRO and whether you should open a separate NRE account.

I wouldn't rely on an old blog post for the paperwork because bank forms and requirements change.

I moved to Canada and had the same confusion. I initially thought NRE and NRO were basically two versions of the same account.

    They're not.

My NRE account is mainly for foreign income that I transfer to India. The NRO account is used for income I earn in India.

The biggest difference I noticed is repatriation. NRE funds are generally freely repatriable, whereas NRO repatriation is subject to applicable conditions and limits.

SBI currently states that NRO accounts can receive legitimate dues in India and that balances can be repatriated up to the applicable regulatory limit, subject to conditions.

I also use an NRE fixed deposit. SBI currently offers NRE term deposits with different tenure options, although rates and terms can change.

One thing I'd definitely check before transferring money is the source of the funds. Don't just move everything into whichever account has a better interest rate. The account type matters based on where the income originated.

I use SBI NRE and NRO accounts and, based on my experience, having both makes things much easier if you have income from both outside and inside India.

I use my NRE account for money that I send from overseas. My NRO account is where Indian income, such as rent, is credited.

The distinction is useful because the accounts have different purposes and different repatriation/tax treatment.

SBI's current NRE information says an NRE account can be used for overseas earnings remitted to India and that NRE deposits are freely repatriable, subject to applicable rules. SBI also states that interest earned on NRE accounts is exempt from Indian income tax, subject to the applicable conditions.

I wouldn't treat the NRE account as a replacement for NRO if you have rental income in India. Keeping the Indian income separate makes tax reporting and record-keeping easier.

For an existing resident savings account, speak to SBI about redesignating/converting it after your residential-status change rather than simply continuing to operate it as a resident account.
