I'm filing my Income Tax Return for AY 2026–27, and I'm a bit confused about Section 10(13A) of the Income Tax Act. My employer pays me a House Rent Allowance (HRA) as part of my salary, and I live in rented accommodation. While checking my Form 16, I noticed that an amount has already been shown as exempt under Section 10(13A), but I'm not sure how this exemption is calculated.
I've read that the exemption depends on factors like the HRA received, rent paid, salary, and whether you live in a metro or non-metro city. However, different websites explain it differently, and I'm worried about making a mistake while filing my return.
Has anyone here claimed HRA exemption under Section 10(13A) recently? Did you simply use the figures from Form 16, or did you calculate the exemption yourself while filing the ITR?
Also, if someone changes jobs during the financial year or lives in different rented houses, does that affect the calculation? I'd appreciate hearing from people who have filed their returns recently.
I understand tax rules may change, so I'm looking for practical experiences rather than assumptions.
I switched jobs midway through the financial year, so I had to check both employers' Form 16s carefully. One employer had considered my HRA correctly, while the other hadn't because I submitted my rent proofs after the payroll deadline.
When I filed my return, I recalculated the exemption using my salary and rent details for each employment period. It took a little extra work, but the final figures matched the rules.
If you changed cities or rented different houses during the year, just make sure your rent records cover each period separately.
I claimed the exemption this year, and my employer had already calculated the eligible HRA exemption under Section 10(13A) in Form 16. Since everything matched my rent receipts and salary details, I used those figures while filing my ITR.
The exemption isn't equal to the entire HRA received. It's calculated based on prescribed rules, and the eligible amount is the lowest of:
I kept my rent receipts and rental agreement in case they were needed later.

One thing I learned was that Section 10(13A) generally applies only if your salary includes an HRA component. A friend of mine received a consolidated salary without HRA, so he couldn't claim this exemption and instead checked whether another provision for rent paid applied.
Also, recent ITR utilities ask for more HRA-related information when claiming the exemption, so it's useful to keep your rent receipts, landlord details, and salary records ready before filing.
