What Is the Current RBI Repo Rate in India in 2026?

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know the current RBI repo rate in India as of October 2026?

I was checking interest rates because I’m trying to understand how changes in the RBI’s monetary policy might affect home loans, EMIs and bank fixed deposit rates. I came across information showing that the repo rate was previously 5.25%, but I also saw recent news about a rate hike.

Could someone clarify the latest repo rate and when the RBI announced the change?

I’d also like to understand a few things:

  • Does a repo rate hike automatically increase home loan EMIs?

  • Will banks increase their fixed deposit interest rates after a repo rate hike?

  • How quickly do banks usually adjust their lending and deposit rates?

  • Where can I check the official RBI announcement?

I know the repo rate is the rate at which the RBI lends money to banks, but I’m not sure how directly it affects ordinary borrowers and depositors.

If anyone has recently checked the RBI’s monetary policy announcement or noticed a change in their loan interest rate, please share your experience.

One detail worth remembering is that the repo rate is a policy rate, not the interest rate a bank charges every borrower.

The October 2026 increase brought the rate to 5.50%. The RBI also indicated a shift towards a calibrated tightening stance amid inflation concerns. That gives some context to the decision, but it doesn't tell us exactly what every bank will do next.

If you already have a floating-rate home loan, check whether it is linked to the repo rate or another benchmark. Also ask your lender whether a rate change would affect the EMI, the remaining loan tenure or both.

For deposits, compare the bank's current FD rates directly rather than assuming they will rise automatically after an RBI announcement.

I was also wondering whether a repo rate hike means banks will immediately offer better FD rates. The relationship isn't always that straightforward.

Banks consider several factors when setting deposit rates, including their need for funds, competition from other banks, liquidity and the tenure of the deposit. Some banks may increase rates on selected FD tenures, while others may leave their rates unchanged.

The same applies to lending rates. A repo-linked loan may respond differently from a loan linked to another benchmark or one with a fixed rate.

So, if you're planning to book an FD or take a loan, I wouldn't make the decision based only on the repo rate. Compare the actual rates offered by different banks and read the applicable terms.

For the latest policy decision, the RBI's official website is the best place to start.

The latest information I found says the RBI increased the policy repo rate by 25 basis points, from 5.25% to 5.50%, following its October 2026 monetary policy meeting. The decision was announced on 7 October 2026.

Regarding home loans, the impact depends on the type of loan you have. If your loan is linked to an external benchmark such as the repo rate, a change may affect your applicable interest rate according to your lender’s reset terms. It does not necessarily mean your EMI will change immediately.

For fixed-rate loans, the effect can be different because the interest rate may remain unchanged for the agreed period.

I would recommend checking your loan agreement or contacting your bank to understand when the next rate reset is due. The RBI rate is a useful indicator, but your individual loan terms determine what happens to your EMI.
