I'm an OCI cardholder living in California and became a US citizen a few years ago. I still have financial ties to India because I visit regularly, and I'm now planning to open a bank account for managing savings and transferring money from the US.
I've been reading about NRE and NRO accounts, but I'm getting mixed information on whether an OCI cardholder can open an NRE account. Some websites say OCI cardholders are eligible as long as they qualify as Non-Resident Indians under the banking rules, while others make it sound like only Indian passport holders can apply.
Has anyone here opened an NRE account after becoming an OCI cardholder? If so, which documents did your bank ask for? Did you need to submit your OCI card along with your foreign passport, PAN, overseas address proof, or anything else?
I'm also curious whether the account opening process was completed online or if you had to visit a branch or the bank's overseas office. How long did it take before your account became active?
I understand each bank may have its own onboarding process and requirements can change, so I'm mainly looking for recent experiences from other OCI cardholders rather than official advice.
I'm based in the UK and opened an NRE account earlier this year. My bank confirmed that my OCI card itself wasn't the deciding factor—they mainly looked at my non-resident status and completed their KYC and compliance checks.
Besides my passport and OCI card, they requested proof of my UK address, PAN, and a recent utility bill. I didn't need to travel to India because the entire process was handled through the bank's NRI banking team.
Every bank seems to have slightly different documentation requirements, so it's worth confirming the latest list before applying.
I opened an NRE account last year after becoming a Canadian citizen and holding an OCI card. In my case, the bank accepted my foreign passport, OCI card, PAN, overseas address proof, and passport-sized photographs. They also asked me to complete their KYC forms.
The application was started online, but I had to courier a few signed documents for verification. From submitting everything to getting the account activated, it took around two weeks.
One suggestion is to check the bank's document checklist before applying because a missing document can delay the process.

I had a similar experience in Australia. I already had an NRO account, and later I applied for an NRE account after updating my non-resident status with the bank.
The verification process took longer than expected because they requested additional proof of my overseas employment and updated contact details. Once everything was approved, the account became operational within about three weeks.
If you're opening the account for the first time, I'd also ask whether the bank offers online document verification or video KYC, as some banks have introduced these options recently.
