I recently downloaded my Income Tax Return (ITR) acknowledgment PDF from the Income Tax e-filing portal, but when I tried to open it, it asked for a password.
I don't remember creating any password while filing my return, so I'm a bit confused. I tried using my PAN number and date of birth separately, but neither worked.
Can someone explain what the ITR PDF password is and how it's generated? Is the password the same for every taxpayer, or does it depend on the assessment year or the document?
Also, if someone has downloaded multiple ITR PDFs over the years, do they all use the same password format?
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has recently opened their ITR acknowledgment or ITR-V PDF. I just want to make sure I'm entering the correct password before downloading the file again.
I downloaded my ITR acknowledgment a few weeks ago, and the same password format worked for me. I also noticed that most PDFs issued through the Income Tax portal follow this pattern.
One suggestion is to avoid copying and pasting the password. I typed it manually because an extra space had caused an error the first time I tried.
If you're still unable to open the file after entering the password correctly, try using another PDF reader or downloading a fresh copy from the e-filing portal.
I had the same question when I downloaded my ITR-V for the first time. The password wasn't something I created during filing.
In my case, the PDF opened after entering my PAN in lowercase letters followed immediately by my date of birth in DDMMYYYY format, without any spaces.
For example, if your PAN is ABCDE1234F and your date of birth is 15 August 1992, the password would be:
abcde1234f15081992
Once I entered it correctly, the PDF opened without any issues.

I initially kept entering my PAN in uppercase, and the document wouldn't open. After checking the instructions on the download page, I realized it had to be entered in lowercase, followed by the date of birth.
Also, make sure you're using the taxpayer's date of birth (or the date of incorporation for non-individual taxpayers) exactly as it appears in the PAN records.
If the password still doesn't work, it's worth downloading the PDF again to make sure the file wasn't corrupted during the download.
