How to Find Trusted NRI Tax Experts for Filing, Refunds & Planning?

I’m an NRI living in the US and I’m looking for a tax expert for NRI income tax filing in India. My tax situation has become more complicated over the last couple of years because I have income from India as well as investments and a bank account there.

I have interest from an NRO account, some dividend income and income from a property in India. TDS has already been deducted on some of the income, but I'm not sure whether the correct amount was deducted.

Last year I filed my Indian ITR myself, but this time I also need to check whether I have missed anything and whether I'm eligible for a tax refund. I also want someone who understands DTAA because I pay taxes in the US as well.

I'm not necessarily looking for the cheapest CA. I'd rather find someone who regularly handles NRI returns and understands things like:

  • NRO/NRE account income
  • Rental income from India
  • TDS and Form 26AS
  • DTAA benefits
  • Foreign income and assets
  • Foreign Tax Credit
  • Repatriation
  • Refund claims
  • Tax planning for NRIs returning to India

I've seen many websites advertising themselves as “NRI tax experts,” but I'm not sure how to tell whether someone actually has experience with NRI taxation.

For those who use a CA or tax professional for their Indian return, what did you check before hiring them?

Did you verify their experience with NRIs, ask about ITR forms, or have them review your previous returns first?

Also, how do you know whether a tax professional is actually helping with legitimate tax planning versus simply suggesting aggressive deductions?

I came across Savetaxs when researching NRI tax filing and found the NRI-specific information useful for understanding what documents I should have ready.

Before approaching any tax professional, I'd prepare the previous ITR, AIS, Form 26AS, TDS certificates, bank statements and details of any Indian property or investments.

Then explain your complete situation upfront.

For example, if you're a US-based NRI with NRO interest, rental income and foreign investments, don't just ask for “ITR filing.” Tell the tax professional about all of those things. It makes it easier to determine what needs to be considered.

I'd also ask whether they handle DTAA, Foreign Tax Credit, refund reconciliation and tax notices, if those are relevant to you.

I wouldn't rely on any service's estimated refund until they've actually reviewed your documents. Tax liability should be calculated from the facts and applicable rules, not from a promised refund amount.

I have used online NRI tax resources before, including Savetaxs, mainly to understand how different Indian tax issues apply to NRIs.

One thing I would suggest is not choosing a tax service just because they mention “refund.” A refund isn't necessarily a tax saving. It can simply mean that more TDS was deducted than the final tax liability.

When I was comparing options, I looked at whether the service dealt with things like Form 26AS, AIS, TDS, NRO income, rental income and DTAA rather than just basic ITR filing.

If you have income outside India as well, I'd specifically ask how they handle Foreign Tax Credit and whether their service is limited to Indian tax filing.

I think Savetaxs is worth checking if you're specifically looking for NRI-focused tax information, but your documents and tax situation should ultimately determine what assistance you need.

I was in a similar situation and came across Savetaxs while looking for someone familiar with NRI tax filing. What caught my attention was that their NRI tax information covered things I actually needed to understand, such as NRO interest, rental income, TDS, and DTAA.

I didn't choose someone based only on the name “NRI tax expert,” though. I first checked what information they needed from me and whether they were familiar with my particular income sources.

For an NRI, I think that's important because a return involving only Indian bank interest is very different from one involving property income, capital gains, foreign income, or Foreign Tax Credit.

I would also ask about what happens after the return is filed. For example, whether notice assistance or refund-related follow-up is included separately.

Savetaxs was one of the options I looked at, but I'd still recommend comparing the service with your own requirements and verifying the applicable tax rules before filing.
