Which Is the Best Bank in India for NRIs? SBI, HDFC, ICICI or Axis?

I’ve been living in the UAE for about six years and am finally planning to organize my banking in India properly. At the moment, I still have an old resident savings account, and I’ve been told that as an NRI, I should convert it to an NRO account and possibly open an NRE account as well.

This is where I’m getting confused because every bank seems to advertise itself as the best NRI bank.

I’m mainly looking at SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank. My requirements are fairly simple:

  • Receive money from my salary abroad
  • Send money to India regularly
  • Keep some money in an NRE account
  • Manage rental income from a property in India through an NRO account
  • Make UPI/local payments when I visit India
  • Transfer money back overseas when needed
  • Possibly open an NRE/NRO fixed deposit later

I’m less concerned about having a fancy credit card or airport lounge access. What matters more to me is whether the bank is easy to deal with from abroad and whether NRI customer service actually responds when there is a problem.

I’ve seen people recommending ICICI because of its online services, while others say SBI is better because of its branch network. HDFC also seems popular among NRIs.

For people who currently maintain NRE and NRO accounts in India, which bank has worked best for you?

Would you choose SBI, HDFC, ICICI, or Axis today? And if you use one bank for NRE and another for NRO, is that worth the extra hassle?

I went with HDFC Bank because I wanted more of a digital/relationship-banking setup.

Their NRI offering includes NRE and NRO savings accounts, remittance services, FCNR deposits and other NRI products. HDFC currently states that NRE funds can be transferred abroad and that NRE savings interest is tax-free in India, subject to applicable rules.

I also like having a mandate holder in India because there are occasionally things that are easier for someone locally to handle.

One thing I'd caution against is choosing a bank only because somebody says its app is better. NRI banking can involve things like FATCA/CRS declarations, KYC updates, tax documents, repatriation paperwork and account-status changes. The quality of support when something goes wrong can matter much more than the normal day-to-day app experience.

Axis is worth comparing too, particularly if you care about premium NRI account benefits. Its current NRI Prime account, for example, has a ₹25,000 minimum monthly balance requirement or a ₹1 lakh term-deposit alternative and includes certain insurance and transaction benefits.

So I’d make a shortlist based on your actual requirements rather than trying to find one universally “best” NRI bank.

I use SBI NRE and NRO accounts, mainly because I wanted a bank with a large branch network in India.

For me, that has been useful because my family sometimes needs to handle things locally. I don't live in India anymore, so having a branch available in different cities gives me some comfort.

SBI's current NRE account information says NRE accounts can be used for overseas earnings remitted to India, and it offers internet banking, debit-card access and different deposit options. SBI also states that interest on NRE accounts is exempt from Indian income tax, subject to the applicable rules.

The downside is that I wouldn't choose a bank purely based on branch availability. Your actual experience can depend heavily on the particular branch and the NRI service team handling your request.

If you rarely visit India and want everything handled digitally, another bank may be a better fit.

For someone who has property income, I'd definitely keep an NRO account for that rather than mixing everything into an NRE account.

I’ve been using ICICI Bank for my NRE/NRO banking for several years, and so far it has worked well for my situation. Most of my banking is done remotely, so online access matters more to me than having a branch close to my parents' home.

My NRE account is mainly for money I send from overseas, while the NRO account handles Indian income. Keeping them separate makes it much easier for me to understand where the money is coming from.

I also like having investment-related services connected to the same banking relationship, although that may not matter to everyone.

I wouldn't say ICICI is automatically the best for every NRI. If you spend a lot of time in smaller cities or need branch support in India, SBI may be more convenient because of its extensive physical presence.

I'd compare the banks based on NRE/NRO fees, remittance charges, minimum balance, online banking, customer service and repatriation procedures, rather than simply choosing the bank with the highest advertised FD rate.

Also remember that an NRE account and an NRO account serve different purposes. NRE is generally used for foreign earnings brought into India, while NRO is commonly used for Indian-source income.
