Canara Bank NRI Account Opening for NRIs

I recently moved to Canada for work and now need to change my banking arrangements in India. I already have a Canara Bank savings account that I opened before moving abroad.

I'm confused about whether I should convert it to an NRO account or open a new NRE account. I also receive rental income in India and plan to transfer some of my Canadian salary to India.

Has anyone recently opened a Canara Bank NRI account from Canada?

I'm mainly looking to understand whether I can complete the process without visiting India, what documents are needed, and whether the documents have to be attested. Also, what did you do with your existing resident savings account after becoming an NRI?

Any recent experience would be really helpful.

I went through a similar process with Canara Bank after moving abroad. The biggest thing that helped me was separating my Indian income from my overseas income.

I ended up using an NRE account for permitted foreign-source funds remitted to India and an NRO account for income arising in India.

Canara Bank currently lists NRE and NRO accounts for NRI/PIO customers. Its NRI FAQ also explains that the choice between NRE and NRO depends largely on the source and intended use of the funds.

The documentation was more involved than opening an ordinary resident savings account. I had to provide my passport, proof of NRI status and overseas address documentation.

Canara's current NRI documentation lists examples of NRI-status evidence such as a valid visa, work permit, residence proof, employment documentation or residence permit. For overseas address proof, it lists documents including an overseas passport, driving licence, utility bill, employer letter and overseas bank statement, among others.

If you're applying from Canada, I'd prepare all of those documents before starting the application.

The NRE/NRO distinction is important because the tax and repatriation treatment isn't identical.

Canara Bank describes its NRE account as an account for NRIs/PIOs and says amounts in the NRE account are repatriable abroad without restrictions, subject to applicable rules.

For an NRO account, Canara describes the account as being used for Indian income and local payments. Its NRO information also states that funds are generally non-repatriable except through the applicable permitted mechanisms.

Canara also provides forms for NRO-to-NRE transfers and for transferring NRO funds abroad, which shows that these transactions have a defined process rather than being treated the same as ordinary NRE transfers.

I'd therefore decide what each source of income is before choosing the account.

For example, Indian rent would generally be handled through NRO, while money remitted from your overseas earnings can be credited to NRE, subject to the applicable rules.

I opened my Canara NRO account while I was outside India, so the non-face-to-face documentation was probably the part that required the most attention.

Canara Bank says that when an NRI is not personally present at the branch, copies of identity and address documents may need to be attested by an authorized official of a Canara Bank foreign office, an overseas bank with a relationship with an Indian bank, a notary, court magistrate/judge, or an Indian Embassy/Consulate.

The current account-opening form also specifically says third-party attestation is mandatory for applicants who are not visiting the branch for account opening.

So I wouldn't just scan your passport and send everything without checking the attestation instructions applicable to your application.

Another thing I learned is that Canara asks for an overseas address proof as well as permanent address information. The exact document accepted can depend on what you're submitting.

If you already have a Canara resident account, tell the bank that you've become an NRI rather than simply continuing to operate it as a resident account.
