I’m an NRI living in the US and will be travelling to India soon. I want to bring some gold jewellery with me and I’m confused about how much I can carry without paying customs duty.
I’ve seen several different figures online, especially 20 grams for men and 40 grams for women. Some websites also mention a 1 kg limit for NRIs who have stayed abroad for a certain period.
I’ve been living outside India for more than a year and the gold I’m bringing is personal jewellery, not gold bars. Does the 20 g/40 g allowance apply to me if I meet the residence requirement?
Also, is the allowance based only on the weight of the jewellery, or is there a maximum value as well? If my jewellery is within the weight limit but exceeds the value limit, would customs duty apply?
If I want to bring more than the duty-free allowance, can I declare it at Customs and pay the applicable duty?
I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who has recently travelled to India with gold jewellery and knows how the current baggage rules work.
I had the same confusion before travelling.
For someone who has been residing abroad for more than a year, the duty-free jewellery allowance is generally 20 g for a male passenger and 40 g for a female passenger, with the respective value limits.
The 1 kg provision is for a different situation and doesn't mean you can simply bring 1 kg of gold into India without paying duty.
I would also keep the purchase invoice or other available documents for recently purchased jewellery. Customs may want to establish the nature and value of what you're carrying.
The rules can change, so I checked the CBIC passenger information shortly before my trip rather than relying on an older article.
The 20 gram/40 gram allowance is the one I would pay attention to for duty-free jewellery.
The CBIC baggage guidance states that a passenger residing abroad can bring jewellery duty-free up to 20 grams with a value cap of ₹50,000 for a gentleman and 40 grams with a value cap of ₹1,00,000 for a lady, subject to the applicable conditions.
So it isn't simply a matter of weighing the jewellery. Both the weight and applicable value cap matter.
The 1 kg figure is different. CBIC's passenger guidance refers to a separate provision under which eligible passengers can import gold, including ornaments, up to 1 kg per passenger, subject to the applicable conditions and customs duty.
I wouldn't interpret 1 kg as a duty-free allowance.
If you're carrying jewellery above the duty-free limit, I'd declare it to Customs rather than trying to use the Green Channel.

One important distinction is between duty-free jewellery and the maximum quantity that may be imported subject to duty.
The current CBIC passenger guidance says the weight of gold, including ornaments, under the applicable import provision should not exceed 1 kg per passenger.
That is separate from the duty-free jewellery allowance.
So, for a qualifying passenger, staying within the applicable 20 g/40 g allowance and value cap is the relevant issue if the question is specifically about bringing jewellery without customs duty.
If you are carrying more than the duty-free allowance, make a declaration and let Customs determine the applicable duty. Don't assume that the 1 kg limit means the entire amount is exempt.
