HDFC Bank NRI Account: Requirements and Process

I’m planning to open an HDFC Bank NRI account after moving to the UK for work, and I’m trying to understand the actual account-opening process before I submit anything.

I’ve been in the UK for around two years and currently have an old savings account in India that I opened before moving abroad. I also have some investments and family expenses in India, so I’m considering opening an NRE account and possibly an NRO account as well.

I checked HDFC Bank’s website and saw that the documentation includes things like a valid passport, PAN or Form 60, proof of NRI status and address proof. The bank also mentions additional certification for some new-to-bank customers applying from overseas.

This is where I’m getting confused because different people seem to have had different experiences.

For those who recently opened an HDFC NRI account from outside India:

  • What documents did you actually submit?
  • Was your passport enough for identity proof?
  • Did you need a visa/work permit as proof of NRI status?
  • What did you use for overseas address proof?
  • Did your documents need notarization or Indian Consulate attestation?
  • Can the whole process be completed online?
  • How long did the account opening and KYC take?
  • What happens to an existing HDFC resident savings account after becoming an NRI?

I’d particularly like to hear from NRIs in the UK, USA, Canada or Australia who opened an account recently.

I opened an HDFC NRO account while I was in India, so my experience wasn't exactly the same as someone applying from abroad.

The eligibility itself was straightforward. HDFC currently says its NRO savings account is available to NRIs and Persons of Indian Origin residing overseas.

The main reason I chose NRO was that I have income originating in India. If you're mainly transferring your overseas salary to India, you'd want to compare that with an NRE account rather than assuming NRO is the right option.

One thing I'd also check is the minimum balance requirement. HDFC currently lists ₹10,000 as the minimum balance for its NRO savings account, although account terms can change.

For anyone applying from overseas, I'd also make sure the name on your passport, PAN and address documents is consistent. If something doesn't match, it's better to clarify it before submission than wait for a KYC query.

My experience was slightly different because I already had an HDFC savings account in India.

I initially started looking at opening a new NRE account but then realized I needed to address the status of my existing resident account separately.

HDFC currently provides a specific Resident Account to NRO Account Conversion Application Form in its NRI forms center.

That was useful because I hadn't understood that opening an NRE account and dealing with an existing resident account are two separate things.

I eventually asked the bank to guide me on the conversion and then dealt with the NRE account separately for funds coming from overseas.

If you're already an HDFC customer, I'd specifically ask about this before opening another account. Also make sure your overseas address and tax-residency details are updated.

The bank's NRI documentation includes FATCA/CRS information, so don't be surprised if you're asked for tax-residency details in addition to the normal KYC documents.

I opened an HDFC NRE account from the UK and the biggest thing I would recommend is getting your documents ready before starting the application.

For my application, I had my Indian passport, UK residence/work documentation, PAN and overseas address proof. HDFC's current NRE documentation confirms that a valid passport, PAN/Form 60 and proof of NRI status such as a valid visa, work permit or overseas resident card are among the required documents.

The address part is worth paying attention to. HDFC says an Indian address isn't mandatory for an NRE account and accepts overseas address documentation.

I initially assumed everything would be completely digital, but there are still KYC/document-verification requirements. HDFC's current KYC guidance says new-to-bank customers may need their documents additionally certified by an eligible overseas bank official, notary, court official or Indian Embassy/Consulate, depending on the application.

So I'd check the exact checklist generated for your application before paying for notarization. Don't get every document certified unnecessarily.
