I'm an NRI based in California and filed my Income Tax Return (ITR) for FY 2025–26 through the Income Tax e-Filing portal in early June 2026. I completed e-verification using Aadhaar OTP the same day, and my return was successfully submitted.
The return has already been processed, but I'm still waiting for my ITR refund. The status on the portal shows that processing has been completed, but I haven't received any refund in my bank account yet. My bank details appear to be pre-validated, and the account is linked for refund credit.
I've checked my Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Form 26AS, and everything seems to match what I reported in my return. I don't have any outstanding tax demands from previous years, so I'm trying to understand why the refund is taking longer than expected.
Mine took a little longer because of a bank account issue.
I'm based in the UK, and although my account was linked on the portal, it hadn't been successfully revalidated after I changed some account details earlier this year. The refund couldn't be credited until I completed the bank account validation again.
Once I updated everything, the refund was released within about a week.
It might be worth opening the "My Bank Accounts" section in the e-Filing portal just to confirm the account still shows as validated and eligible for refunds.
I went through something similar last year.
My return was processed about a week before the refund was actually credited. The e-Filing portal showed "Processed," but the refund status didn't change immediately. After another five or six business days, I received an email confirming that the refund had been issued, and the amount showed up in my bank account the following day.
In my case, there wasn't any problem with the return itself. It was simply a matter of waiting for the refund process to complete.
I'd suggest checking the refund status every few days rather than worrying if the money doesn't arrive immediately after processing.

I filed from Singapore in June, and my refund arrived roughly two weeks after my return was processed.
I also checked AIS and Form 26AS several times because I thought maybe there was a mismatch, but everything was correct. I eventually called the helpline, and they confirmed there was no issue with my return—it was simply still moving through the refund cycle.
From what I've seen, refund timelines can vary depending on the return and any verification steps. If everything looks correct in your account, it may just require a little more time.
