Should I Close My Resident Savings Account After Moving Abroad?

I moved to Germany about eight months ago for work and recently qualified as an NRI under Indian tax rules. Before leaving India, I had a regular resident savings account where my salary used to be credited. Since moving abroad, I've continued using the account occasionally for utility payments and to receive a few refunds, but now I'm hearing that NRIs aren't supposed to continue operating a resident savings account.

Some friends have told me I should close it immediately, while others say I only need to convert it into an NRO account. I'm getting mixed advice, and even different bank branches seem to explain it differently.

Has anyone here gone through this recently? Did your bank ask you to close the resident account completely, or was it simply redesignated as an NRO account? How long did the process take, and what documents did they ask for? I have my passport, visa, overseas address proof, and PAN, but I'm not sure if anything else is usually required.

I also have a few SIPs and automatic bill payments linked to that account, so I'm trying to understand whether they'll continue working after the conversion.

I'm not looking for legal advice—just hoping to hear from people who've actually updated their bank account after becoming an NRI. I know bank policies and RBI regulations can change, so I'll verify everything with my bank before taking any action.

One thing I'd be careful about is the definition of your residential status under FEMA.

Moving abroad temporarily for a short trip doesn't automatically mean you should change every Indian bank account. RBI's guidance specifically refers to leaving India for employment, business, vocation, or another purpose indicating an intention to stay outside India for an uncertain period.

If you've relocated overseas for a long-term job and are now a person resident outside India under FEMA, you should notify your bank rather than continuing to treat the account as a normal resident account.

Also check any linked products before making changes:

    • SIPs or investment mandates
    • Insurance payments
    • Loan EMIs
    • Standing instructions
    • Demat/trading accounts
    • Fixed deposits
    • Utility payments

The bank may have separate procedures for updating each relationship.

I went through something similar when I moved to Canada.

I initially thought I should close my old savings account and transfer everything overseas. That wasn't necessary for me. The bank helped me change the account to an NRO savings account after I submitted the required documents and updated my non-resident status.

An NRO account is useful for handling legitimate Indian rupee transactions after becoming non-resident. RBI's current FAQ explains that when a resident Indian becomes a person resident outside India, the existing resident account should be designated as an NRO account.

Whether you also need an NRE account depends on what you want to do with your overseas income. NRO and NRE accounts have different purposes and rules, so I wouldn't assume that one automatically replaces the other.

I'd first get your existing resident account correctly redesignated and then discuss NRE requirements with your bank.

You generally don't need to close the account simply because you moved abroad. The important issue is changing the account's residential status.

RBI guidance says that when a person resident in India leaves India for employment, business, vocation, or another purpose indicating an intention to stay outside India for an uncertain period, the existing resident account should be designated as a Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) account.

So, rather than continuing to operate the account as an ordinary resident savings account, you would normally contact your bank and request the appropriate redesignation.

The money already in the account does not simply disappear or have to be withdrawn because of the conversion. The bank can provide the procedures for redesignating the account and updating your KYC/residential-status information.

I'd contact the bank before continuing regular transactions and tell them that your residential status has changed.

I moved to Australia a few years ago and delayed updating my bank because I wasn't aware of the requirement.

When I eventually informed the bank about my change in residential status, they helped convert the account rather than asking me to close it. They also reviewed my KYC details and updated my communication address, email, and mobile number.

One thing I'd suggest is checking any investments, SIPs, insurance premiums, or loan EMIs linked to the account. Mine continued normally after the conversion, but I still notified the fund house and a few service providers about my NRI status just to avoid future issues.

I had a slightly different experience with SBI after relocating to the UK.

The branch advised me that, as an NRI, I shouldn't continue maintaining a regular resident savings account and recommended redesignating it as an NRO account instead. They also suggested opening an NRE account separately for overseas income that I planned to remit to India.

The document verification took a little longer because they wanted an updated overseas address proof. Once everything was approved, the account status was changed without requiring me to close it.

Policies can differ slightly between banks, so it's worth confirming the latest process with your own branch.
