I've been seeing a lot of posts on social media claiming that the income tax ITR filing date has been extended for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27), but I can't find any official confirmation. I'm a salaried employee and usually file my return before the deadline, but this year I waited because several people said the government would announce an extension.
Now I'm worried that I may have relied on incorrect information. I know the original due date for individuals who don't require a tax audit was 31 July 2026, but has the CBDT actually extended it?
Has anyone seen an official notification, or are these just rumors? If the deadline hasn't been extended, what happens to taxpayers who missed it because they were expecting more time?
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has checked the official Income Tax portal or followed the latest updates. I don't want to depend on WhatsApp forwards or social media posts if they're not accurate.
There was definitely confusion this week.
A few news reports discussed the possibility of an extension because many taxpayers experienced temporary issues with the e-filing portal. However, most tax professionals were advising people not to wait unless an official CBDT notification was issued. Eventually, the deadline remained unchanged.
I've learned over the years that I only trust updates published on the Income Tax Department website or official CBDT announcements.
I checked the official Income Tax portal yesterday because I had the same question.
As far as I could see, there was no notification extending the 31 July 2026 deadline for salaried individuals and other taxpayers who don't require a tax audit. There was a lot of speculation online due to portal glitches, but I couldn't find any CBDT circular confirming an extension.
I ended up filing before the deadline because I didn't want to risk paying a late filing fee based on rumors.

Unfortunately, I believed one of those social media messages and missed the deadline.
When I logged into the Income Tax e-filing portal the next day, I realized there had been no extension announced. I had to proceed with filing a belated return instead.
If anyone is unsure in the future, I'd suggest checking the official portal first rather than relying on screenshots or forwarded messages. It only takes a few minutes and can save a lot of trouble.
