What Documents are Required for NRI ITR Filing?

I'm an NRI living in the UAE, and I'm getting ready to file my Income Tax Return (ITR) in India for the first time in a few years. My income in India mainly comes from rent on an apartment in Pune, interest from my NRO account, and I also sold some mutual funds during the last financial year.

I'm trying to gather all the documents before I start the filing process, but every website seems to list something different. Some mention only PAN, Form 26AS, and bank statements, while others also include AIS, TIS, capital gains statements, passport copies, and NRE/NRO account details.

For those of you who have recently completed NRI ITR filing, what documents did you actually need? Did you have to upload any supporting documents while filing online, or do you just keep them for your records?

Also, if you've claimed a TDS refund or reported rental income, were there any additional documents that proved useful?

I'd appreciate hearing what others prepared before filing. I know every tax situation is different, but I'd like to avoid missing anything important.

I live in the US and usually prepare a checklist every year before filing.

    Mine includes:

    • PAN card
    • Passport
    • Form 26AS
    • AIS
    • TDS certificates (Form 16A, where applicable)
    • NRE and NRO bank statements
    • Rental income records
    • Home loan interest certificate (if applicable)
    • Capital gains reports
    • Details of advance tax or self-assessment tax paid

Even though the return itself doesn't require uploading these documents, having them ready helps avoid mistakes and makes it easier to reconcile income and TDS figures before submitting the return.

My case was a bit more complicated because I sold shares and equity mutual funds.

Besides the basic documents like PAN, AIS, Form 26AS, and bank statements, I downloaded the capital gains statement from my broker. That saved me a lot of time when reporting gains.

I also compared the information in AIS with my broker's statement because there were a couple of entries that I wanted to verify before filing. If you've sold investments or property, I'd definitely recommend collecting those transaction statements in advance.

I filed my ITR from the UK last month, and having everything organized beforehand made the process much easier.

The documents I kept ready included my PAN, passport, Form 26AS, AIS, bank statements for my NRE and NRO accounts, Form 16A for TDS on interest, and my tenant's rent details. Since I also had fixed deposit interest, I downloaded the annual interest certificate from my bank.

I wasn't asked to upload any of these documents while filing. As far as I understand, the Income Tax Department's ITR forms are generally annexure-less, meaning you don't attach supporting documents with the return. However, it's important to retain them in case they're needed later during verification or assessment.
