What Are the Most Common Tax Mistakes Made by NRIs?

I'm an NRI living in the USA and have been filing my Indian Income Tax Return for the last few years. My income in India includes rental income, bank interest, and some mutual fund investments. While reviewing my documents for AY 2026-27, I started wondering about the most common tax mistakes NRIs make.

I've heard stories about people reporting the wrong residential status, missing the ITR filing deadline, forgetting to claim TDS credits, or not disclosing certain income correctly. Since tax rules for NRIs can be a bit different, I want to avoid making any errors that could lead to notices or delays in processing my return.

For those who have been filing taxes in India for a while, what mistakes have you seen most often? Are there any lessons you learned from your own experience that could help someone filing an NRI return?

My biggest mistake was waiting until the last week before the filing deadline. I had capital gains from selling shares, and collecting all the documents took much longer than expected. Now I prepare everything well in advance and review whether I'm eligible for any DTAA or foreign tax credit benefits before filing.

I live in Canada and almost missed claiming the TDS deducted by my tenant and bank. Fortunately, I checked Form 26AS before filing and noticed everything hadn't been reflected initially. Since then, I always reconcile my income with Form 26AS and the Annual Information Statement (AIS) before submitting my return.

One mistake I made during my first year as an NRI was selecting the wrong residential status while filing my ITR. I accidentally filed as a resident instead of a non-resident. My CA spotted it before submission, but it made me realize how important that single selection is because it affects the way your income is taxed.
