What Happens If I Miss the ITR Filing Deadline as an NRI?

I'm an NRI living in the UK and usually file my Indian Income Tax Return every year because I earn rental income from a property in India. Unfortunately, I got caught up with work and realized I might miss the ITR filing deadline for AY 2026-27.

I'm trying to understand what happens if an NRI files an ITR after the due date. Can I still file a belated return? Will there be a late filing fee or interest? I'm also expecting a small tax refund this year—will filing late affect that?

Has anyone here missed the ITR deadline as an NRI? If so, what was your experience? Were there any complications while filing the belated return or claiming your refund?

I know every tax situation is different, but I'd appreciate hearing about recent experiences and any practical advice.

I filed late from the UAE last year. Before filing, I checked whether I had any outstanding tax liability because interest kept increasing until the payment was made. Once I cleared the tax and submitted the return, everything went through normally. If you're expecting a refund, it's still worth filing instead of skipping the return.

I live in Australia and had interest income in India. My CA told me that missing the due date doesn't always mean you can't file, but there can be consequences like a late filing fee, interest on any unpaid tax, and certain losses may not be allowed to be carried forward. It depends on your individual tax situation.

I missed the deadline once while living in Canada. I was still able to file a belated ITR through the Income Tax e-Filing portal. I had to pay the applicable late filing fee before submitting the return. My refund was eventually processed, although it took a little longer than in previous years.
