SBI vs ICICI NRI Account: User Experiences and Key Differences

I’m a US citizen and OCI cardholder living in California, and I’m trying to decide between SBI and ICICI for my NRI banking in India.

I currently have an old Indian savings account that I need to convert because I’m no longer an Indian resident. I also want an NRE account for money I send from the US and an NRO account for rental income from my property in Pune.

I’ve been comparing SBI and ICICI, but the experiences online seem very mixed. Some people prefer SBI because of its large branch network and long history with NRI banking. Others say ICICI is easier to manage from overseas because of its digital banking and international remittance services.

For me, the important things are:

  • Ease of opening NRE/NRO accounts from the US
  • Online banking and mobile app
  • Sending money from the US
  • Managing rental income
  • Repatriating money when needed
  • Customer support while living abroad
  • Branch support when I visit India
  • Minimum balance and other charges

I’m not necessarily looking for the bank with the highest interest rate. I mainly want an account that is straightforward to manage remotely.

If you've used both SBI and ICICI as an NRI or OCI holder, which one has been easier to deal with? Were there any problems with KYC, remittances, account conversion or customer service?

I think it depends more on your banking habits than on which bank is objectively better.

I use SBI for one account, and ICICI for another, and both have worked reasonably well.

For NRE/NRO functionality, both provide the basic accounts an OCI holder would normally be looking at. SBI's current information specifically lists OCI eligibility for NRE and NRO accounts. ICICI also provides NRE/NRO accounts to eligible OCI customers.

The bigger differences I've noticed are service experience, digital banking, branch access, and how quickly a particular issue gets resolved.

If you're in the US and rarely visit India, I'd give more weight to remote account servicing, international remittance options, and NRI customer support.

If you have parents or family members who regularly need to visit a branch for you, SBI's branch presence may be useful.

Also compare the actual schedule of charges before opening the account. Those can matter more than small differences in advertised features.

I’m an OCI holder in the UK and use ICICI. My experience has been better for remote banking.

ICICI currently offers NRE/NRO account opening through both an assisted process and an online DIY process. It accepts an OCI card as proof of NRI status and lists passport, address proof and other KYC documents as part of the process.

The international transfer side is also convenient for me. ICICI has Money2India and Money2World for global money transfers, along with dedicated NRI services.

I have an NRE account for money coming from the UK and an NRO account for Indian income.

For someone who lives abroad permanently and does most banking online, I'd personally lean toward ICICI.

But if you regularly need branch services in smaller Indian cities, SBI's network could make more difference.

I’ve been using SBI as an NRI for several years and have generally stayed with them because I already had a relationship with SBI in India.

One advantage for me is the branch network. When I’m physically in India and need something handled at a branch, finding an SBI branch isn't usually difficult.

SBI's current NRI information confirms that OCI holders can open NRE and NRO accounts, and it specifically says existing domestic accounts need to be converted to NRO or closed when the account holder becomes an NRI.

I also use internet banking for most routine transactions now, so I don't visit branches nearly as much as I used to.

The downside is that some things can still feel more paperwork-heavy than expected. If you're completely overseas and want everything handled digitally, I'd compare the account-opening and service process carefully before choosing SBI.
