IndusInd Bank NRI Account: Features and Requirements

I am currently comparing a few Indian banks for opening an NRI account, and IndusInd Bank is one of the options I am considering. I have been living in the UK for several years and want an Indian bank account mainly to manage my India-related finances while continuing to receive money from overseas.

I came across IndusInd Bank's NRI banking options and saw that they offer NRE and NRO accounts, and there are also FCNR deposit facilities. However, I am trying to understand the practical features and requirements before I start the application.

My situation is fairly straightforward. I have an Indian passport, a valid UK residence/work document, a UK driving licence and an Indian address. I also have a PAN card. I am not sure which documents IndusInd Bank will require for the initial NRI KYC.

I am particularly interested in knowing:

  • What documents are required to open an IndusInd Bank NRI account?
  • Do I need both Indian and overseas address proof?
  • Is PAN mandatory?
  • Can I open both an NRE and NRO account?
  • What are the main differences between the NRE and NRO options?
  • Can I manage the account through online/mobile banking while living abroad?
  • Is an FCNR deposit available if I don't want to convert all my foreign currency into INR?

I would appreciate experiences from anyone who has recently opened an IndusInd Bank NRI account, especially people applying from the UK, USA, Canada or UAE.

I'm mainly looking for practical information about the documents and account features rather than which bank is "best."

I'm in the UAE and have been using an NRI banking relationship in India for several years.

One thing I would add is that remote banking convenience matters a lot more than I expected. When you live abroad, even a simple KYC update can become inconvenient if the bank requires a physical visit.

IndusInd's customer documentation confirms that the bank has NRI deposit products including NRE, NRO and FCNR, and its NRI forms collect both overseas and Indian address information.

For the documents, don't just prepare your passport. Have your overseas status document and address proof ready too.

In my case, keeping a recent overseas bank statement and residence document available helped when the bank wanted additional verification.

Also check your PAN status before opening the account. The current IndusInd NRI form states that PAN is mandatory for NR accounts, with Form 60 provided where applicable.

If you already have an IndusInd account as a resident Indian and have subsequently become an NRI, that's a slightly different situation. You should tell the bank about the change in residential status rather than simply continuing to operate the old resident account as before.

I think the first thing you should decide is whether you need an NRE account, NRO account or both.

I initially thought an NRI account was just one type of account, but the distinction becomes important once you have both overseas and Indian-source income.

An NRE account can be useful for eligible overseas funds maintained in India, while an NRO account is generally used for managing legitimate India-related income and transactions.

IndusInd's current NRI account-opening form actually provides an option to select NRE, NRO or both, which makes this fairly straightforward if you have both types of financial activity.

The bank also lists FCNR(B) among its non-resident deposit products. So if someone wants to maintain eligible foreign-currency deposits rather than immediately converting everything to rupees, that is another option to investigate.

I would also look at the transaction and repatriation rules separately. The fact that you can hold money in an account doesn't automatically mean every rupee can be transferred overseas without conditions.

For anyone applying from abroad, I'd recommend checking the latest IndusInd NRI forms rather than relying on a checklist posted several years ago. KYC documents and procedures can change.

I opened an IndusInd NRI account from outside India, and the documentation was the part I would prepare most carefully.

The bank's NRI account-opening form allows you to select NRE, NRO or both NRE and NRO, so you don't necessarily have to choose only one type if your financial situation requires both. The form also has provisions for joint operation and different joint-account situations.

For KYC, I would have the following ready:

    • Passport
    • Valid visa/residence/work permit
    • PAN
    • Overseas address proof
    • Indian address details
    • Recent photograph
    • Completed NRI account-opening form
    • Any additional documents requested by the bank

One thing I noticed is that the bank's NRI documentation specifically captures the country of residence, passport details and type of visa/work permit. So I wouldn't submit an application using only your Indian documents.

For address proof, the bank's published account-opening documentation lists several acceptable identity/address documents, including passport, driving licence and certain recent utility or financial statements. The exact document accepted for your particular application can depend on the KYC process.

My advice would be to scan everything clearly before starting the application and make sure the names and dates match across your documents.
