Can an NRI File ITR without Visiting India?

I'm an NRI living in the US on an H1B visa and haven't visited India in over two years. I have rental income from a flat in Hyderabad, interest from my NRO account, and some TDS deducted on fixed deposits. Since I'll likely need to file an Income Tax Return (ITR) for AY 2026-27, I was wondering if the entire process can be completed from abroad.

I already have a PAN card, but my Aadhaar isn't linked because I haven't been eligible to enroll. I've read that people can file ITRs online, but I'm not sure whether e-verification works for NRIs who are outside India. Some friends told me they used net banking, while others mentioned sending a signed ITR-V in the past.

Has anyone here successfully filed their ITR from outside India without traveling back? Were you able to complete everything online, including verification? Also, did you face any issues with OTPs, PAN validation, or receiving a refund in an NRO account?

I understand every case is different, but I'd appreciate hearing about recent experiences before I start the filing process.

I've been working in the UAE for several years, and I've never had to visit India just to file an ITR.

One thing I'd suggest is collecting all your tax documents before you begin. I downloaded my AIS, Form 26AS, interest certificates, and capital gains statements in advance. Having everything ready made the filing process much smoother.

If you don't have Aadhaar, don't assume you can't file. There are other verification methods available for many taxpayers, depending on their eligibility and account setup.

Requirements and verification options can change over time, so always review the latest guidance on the Income Tax e-filing portal before submitting your return.

I filed from Canada earlier this year and didn't need to travel to India at all.

The only challenge I had was receiving OTPs because my Indian mobile number was inactive. I updated my contact details on the e-filing portal beforehand, which made things easier.

Apart from that, everything—from uploading the return to tracking the processing status—was done online. My CA handled the filing, but I logged in myself to verify the return.

If you're expecting a refund, double-check that your bank account details are correct before filing.

Yes, I've been filing my Indian tax returns from the UK for the last four years without visiting India.

I have rental income and some capital gains, and the entire filing process has been online for me. I use the Income Tax e-filing portal and verify my return through my bank account since I don't have Aadhaar linked either.

The most important thing was making sure my PAN was active and my bank account was pre-validated on the portal. My refund was credited directly to my NRO account after the return was processed.

The verification methods available can depend on your account and circumstances, so it's worth checking the options shown after you submit the return.
