Income Tax Refund Delays: Has Anyone Else Had This Issue?

I filed my Indian income tax return claiming a refund, but the refund is taking much longer than I expected. I’m an NRI living in the U.S., and this is the first time I’ve had a significant refund from my Indian ITR.

My return was filed and e-verified, and the refund amount is showing in the return details. However, I still haven't received the money in my bank account.

I initially thought refunds were almost automatic once the return was filed. After checking the Income Tax Department portal, I realized there is a separate processing stage before the refund is actually issued.

Has anyone else experienced an income tax refund delay in India?

I’m trying to understand whether I should simply wait or whether there is something I need to correct. A few things I'm wondering about are:

  • How long does an income tax refund normally take after e-verification?
  • What does it mean if the ITR is processed but the refund hasn't arrived?
  • Can an incorrect bank account cause a refund delay?
  • Does the bank account need to be pre-validated?
  • What happens if the name on the bank account doesn't exactly match the PAN?
  • Can an outstanding tax demand be adjusted against the refund?
  • What should I do if the refund status says “refund failed”?
  • Is there a separate process for requesting a refund reissue?

I've also received emails from the Income Tax Department in previous years, so I'm checking my registered email carefully in case there is an intimation or discrepancy notice.

For anyone who has recently received an Indian income tax refund after a delay, how long did yours take and what did you have to do?

I had a slightly different issue. My return was processed and the refund was determined, but the refund was put on hold because of an issue with my PAN status.

The Income Tax Department has recently issued communications where refunds are placed on hold under section 139AA(2) when PAN is inoperative because it isn't linked with Aadhaar.

So if your refund is delayed, I'd check the portal messages and notices rather than assuming it's simply a processing backlog.

For NRIs, I'd also be careful about the Aadhaar issue because not every NRI necessarily has the same Aadhaar circumstances as a resident taxpayer. The applicable rules depend on the individual's situation.

Another thing I learned is not to keep filing revised returns just because a refund hasn't arrived. A delayed refund doesn't automatically mean that the original return was wrong.

    First check:

    1. Whether the ITR was e-verified.
    2. The current ITR/refund status.
    3. Any intimation from the department.
    4. Bank-account validation.
    5. Outstanding demand or adjustment.
    6. Any communication saying the refund has failed or is on hold.

My refund actually showed as processed, but the money didn't reach my account.

I eventually discovered that the bank account I had selected for the refund wasn't properly validated.

The Income Tax Department says bank account pre-validation is compulsory for refund credit. It also lists incorrect IFSC details, a closed account and a mismatch between the bank-account name and PAN details as possible reasons for refund failure.

After correcting the bank details and completing the required validation, I submitted the refund reissue request through the portal.

    So I'd distinguish between:

    Refund still processing

    and

Refund issued/processed but failed to reach the bank.

Those aren't necessarily the same problem.

Also check whether there has been any partial or full adjustment against an outstanding demand. The refund-status section on the e-filing portal shows different refund outcomes, including issued, partially adjusted, fully adjusted and failed.

My advice would be to look at the exact status rather than relying only on the refund amount shown in your ITR.

I had a refund delayed last year, and the first thing I checked was whether my return had actually been e-verified.

According to the Income Tax Department's current refund guidance, refund processing starts only after the return has been e-verified. The department says refunds usually take around 4–5 weeks to be credited, although individual cases can take longer.

I logged into the e-filing portal and went to:

e-File → Income Tax Returns → View Filed Returns

Then I selected the relevant assessment year and opened the return details. The portal showed the refund lifecycle there.

In my case, the return was still being processed, so there wasn't anything I could do immediately other than monitor the status and check my email.

I also checked my bank account details because I'd previously changed banks. The department lists several reasons why a refund can fail, including an account not being pre-validated, an account-name/PAN mismatch, an incorrect IFSC or a closed bank account.

So I'd check those things before assuming the refund is stuck with the tax department.
