I'm an NRI living in the USA and own a piece of agricultural land in India that I inherited from my parents. The land is leased to a local farmer, and I receive income from it every year.
As I'm preparing my ITR for AY 2026-27, I'm confused about whether agricultural income is taxable for NRIs. I know agricultural income is generally exempt under certain conditions, but I'm not sure if the same rules apply to NRIs or if my residential status changes anything.
Has anyone here reported agricultural income while filing an NRI tax return? Did you have to disclose it in your ITR even if it wasn't taxable? Also, does it make a difference if the income comes directly from farming versus leasing the land?
I'd appreciate hearing about your experiences or any guidance on how this is usually handled.
I had a similar situation in Canada. My accountant asked whether the income was actually from agricultural activities or simply rent from leasing the land. The tax treatment can differ depending on the arrangement, so it's worth reviewing the agreement carefully before filing.
I'm based in the UK and have agricultural land in Punjab. My CA explained that genuine agricultural income earned from agricultural operations in India is generally exempt from tax, even for NRIs. However, I still disclosed the details in my ITR where applicable. The nature of the income was important, so I kept records of the lease and land documents.

I receive agricultural income from family-owned land in Maharashtra. While filing my ITR, my tax advisor stressed the importance of maintaining supporting documents such as land ownership records and proof of agricultural activities. Even if the income is exempt, proper documentation can be helpful if questions arise later.
