I'm an NRI living in the US and I'm planning to file my Income Tax Return (ITR) for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27). I have a PAN card, but I don't have an Aadhaar card because I've been living outside India for several years.
When I started reading about the ITR filing process, I came across several articles discussing PAN-Aadhaar linking and Aadhaar verification. That left me wondering whether NRIs can file an ITR without Aadhaar or if it's mandatory to obtain one first.
My income in India consists of rental income from a property in Bengaluru and interest from my NRO account. I also had some TDS deducted during the year, so I plan to file an ITR to claim the correct tax treatment and, if applicable, a refund.
Has anyone here successfully filed an ITR as an NRI without an Aadhaar card? Did the Income Tax e-Filing portal ask you to link Aadhaar, or were you able to complete the filing using only your PAN?
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has filed recently. I understand the rules can change, so I'll also verify the latest guidance issued by the Income Tax Department before submitting my return.
I actually have an Aadhaar card because I visit India frequently, but one of my colleagues in Dubai doesn't.
He was able to file his return without Aadhaar as an NRI. The important part was ensuring his PAN details and residential status were correct. Since he was claiming a TDS refund, he also verified his bank account, AIS, and Form 26AS before filing.
If you already have an Aadhaar card, your situation may be different, so it's worth checking the latest rules that apply to your case.
I'm based in the UK and filed my ITR earlier this year without an Aadhaar card.
Since I'm an NRI and my residential status was correctly selected in the return, I didn't face any issue filing with just my PAN. The portal didn't require me to quote an Aadhaar number because I wasn't eligible to obtain one under the circumstances that applied to me at the time.
I did make sure my profile on the Income Tax portal reflected my correct non-resident status. Apart from that, the filing process was pretty normal.

I remember being confused because there was a lot of discussion about mandatory PAN-Aadhaar linking.
After reading the official clarification, I found that the Aadhaar quoting and linking requirement generally applies to people who are eligible to obtain Aadhaar. The government has clarified that this requirement does not apply to non-residents who are not eligible to obtain Aadhaar.
Even so, if an NRI already has an Aadhaar number, it's a good idea to review whether any PAN-Aadhaar compliance requirements apply to their individual situation before filing.
