I’m an NRI living in the US and I have an old SBI savings account in India that I no longer use. I opened the account when I was living in India, but after moving abroad I started using an NRE account for my banking needs.
The old SBI account still has a small balance, and I would now like to close it rather than keep maintaining an account that I don't really use.
My problem is that I’m currently outside India and won't be visiting for several months. I checked SBI's website but I'm not completely clear about whether an NRI can close an SBI account online from abroad or whether I have to visit the branch personally.
I also want to know whether converting the account to NRO status before closing it makes any difference.
I had an old SBI savings account from before I moved to Canada. In my case, I initially assumed that internet banking would have a simple “close account” option.
It wasn't that straightforward.
The account was linked to several services, and the branch wanted the account closure request and supporting documents. Since I wasn't in India, I had to coordinate with the branch about how they wanted the signed documents submitted.
I would not assume that logging into SBI online banking means the entire closure process can be completed digitally.
Another thing to check is the balance. If you're closing the account from abroad, ask SBI how they will return the remaining funds and which account can receive them.
If the account is still classified as a resident savings account even though you've become an NRI, I'd raise that with SBI as well. The correct treatment can depend on your circumstances and the account type.
My suggestion is to email or call the branch first and ask for their current NRI account closure procedure before couriering documents internationally.
I haven't closed an SBI account completely online myself, but I dealt with a similar issue after moving to the US.
The first thing I found out was that simply becoming an NRI doesn't mean an old resident savings account should continue indefinitely in the same status. The bank needs to know about the change in residential status and may require the account to be converted or otherwise dealt with according to its applicable NRI banking procedures.
For closure, my branch asked for a signed account closure request and identity documents. Because I was abroad, they also wanted the documents submitted in the format they accepted for an overseas customer.
I would contact the specific SBI branch where the account is maintained before sending anything. Requirements can differ depending on the account type and how the account is being closed.
Also check whether there are any pending transactions, auto-debits, linked UPI services, ECS mandates or standing instructions before requesting closure.
I wouldn't leave the account simply because it has a small balance. It's better to ask SBI what they want you to do now that you're an NRI.

One issue people sometimes overlook is the difference between closing an SBI resident savings account and managing an SBI NRO/NRE account.
If the account was opened while you were resident in India and you later became an NRI, don't assume the account can simply remain unchanged forever.
I would first tell SBI that you've become an NRI and ask what they require for the existing account.
