Best Indian Banks for NRIs Living in the UAE: NRE & NRO Options

I compared HDFC Bank and Axis Bank because both have fairly developed NRI services.

HDFC has a dedicated UAE/Dubai NRI banking page. It specifically mentions NRE savings accounts, international debit cards, 24/7 NetBanking and MobileBanking, and the ability to appoint a resident Indian as a mandate holder.

Axis is also worth comparing if UAE-based support is important. Its NRI services page lists representative offices in Dubai, Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi, along with 24×7 NRI phone banking, digital banking, and dedicated NRI email support.

So, for someone living in the UAE, I'd compare HDFC and Axis alongside SBI and ICICI rather than assuming one bank is universally better.

I use ICICI Bank for NRI banking, and the main reason I chose it was the online experience.

For someone living in Dubai, I think digital access is particularly important because you don't want to travel to India every time you need to check something or make a routine transaction.

ICICI offers NRE and NRO accounts for NRIs and has dedicated NRI banking services. I'd compare its UAE remittance rates and service charges with SBI and HDFC before opening an account.

One thing I'd recommend is separating the purpose of the accounts. Your NRE account can be useful for overseas earnings that you want to maintain in India, while an NRO account is generally used for income arising in India.

RBI confirms that NRIs and PIOs can open NRE accounts, while an NRO account is available to persons resident outside India for bona fide rupee transactions. 

I would keep SBI on the shortlist if you already have an SBI relationship in India.

The main advantage for me is the size of SBI’s Indian network and the range of NRI banking products. You can compare NRE, NRO and FCNR(B) options depending on how you receive and use your money.

For someone in the UAE, I would specifically check the current UAE remittance arrangements and exchange rates before deciding. The actual cost of transferring AED to INR can make a bigger difference over time than small differences in account features.

Another thing to check is how the bank handles KYC updates and service requests from overseas. My experience is that having an existing SBI relationship can make some things easier, but the process can still depend on the particular request.

I wouldn't say SBI is automatically the best choice, but it is a reasonable option for an NRI who wants a large Indian banking network.
