I’m an NRI and recently filed my Indian income tax return, but I’ve noticed a mistake in the TDS details. The amount claimed in my return does not match the amount showing in Form 26AS.
Can I correct the error after filing my return? Do I need to submit a revised ITR, raise a rectification request, or ask the buyer to correct the TDS statement?
I’d appreciate some guidance on which option to use and whether the mistake could delay my refund.
If the buyer or another deductor reported your PAN or TDS amount incorrectly, you generally need to contact them and request a correction to their TDS statement.
You cannot usually fix an error in the deductor’s original statement simply by changing your own return. First, check Form 26AS and your TDS certificate to identify the discrepancy.
It depends on where the error occurred. If you entered the wrong TDS amount while filing your return, you may be able to file a revised return if the applicable conditions and deadline allow it.
If your return has already been processed and the mistake relates to a tax credit that was not considered correctly, you may be able to submit a rectification request through the Income Tax Department’s portal.

I would also check the status of your return before choosing a correction method. The process can differ depending on whether the return is still awaiting processing or you have received an intimation under section 143(1).
Keep your ITR acknowledgment, Form 26AS, TDS certificate and supporting payment records together. These can help you explain the mismatch if the refund is delayed.
