I'm an NRI living in New Jersey, USA, and I'm getting ready to file my Income Tax Return (ITR) in India for the first time after becoming a US citizen. While organizing my documents, I noticed that the name on my PAN card doesn't exactly match my current passport.
On my PAN card, my name includes my middle name in full, but on my US passport, it's shown as a middle initial. The surname and date of birth are the same on both documents. I also hold an OCI card, and that follows the same format as my passport.
I'm worried this discrepancy might cause problems when filing my ITR or during e-verification. Has anyone filed their Indian tax return with a similar mismatch? Did the Income Tax portal accept the return without any issues, or were you asked to update your PAN details first?
I'm also wondering whether banks or investment companies ever flagged the mismatch during KYC updates. My PAN is linked to my bank accounts in India, and I'd rather resolve any issues before the tax filing deadline if necessary.
I know every case can be different, and I'm not asking for legal or tax advice. I'd like to hear from anyone who's gone through something similar and learn how they handled it.
My experience was slightly different. I live in the UK, and my passport had my surname split differently from my PAN because of a formatting change after naturalization.
Before filing my return, my CA suggested reviewing all my records, including PAN, bank accounts, and investments, to make sure the information was as consistent as possible. We updated the PAN record first, and after that my annual KYC updates became much easier.
It wasn't a mandatory issue for filing in my situation, but correcting it early helped avoid repeated document requests from financial institutions.
I had almost the same issue after becoming a Canadian citizen. My Indian PAN showed my full middle name, while my Canadian passport only used the initial.
I filed my ITR without any problem because the PAN details already matched the Income Tax records. However, when I updated my KYC with one of my mutual fund providers, they noticed the name difference and asked me for additional identity documents before completing the verification.
In my case, it didn't stop me from filing my return, but I eventually submitted a PAN correction request so all my records would be consistent going forward.

I'm based in Australia and noticed a mismatch after renewing my foreign passport. My PAN still reflected my older name format, while my passport and OCI card used the updated version.
My bank accepted both documents after asking for an explanation and a copy of my OCI card. I was still able to complete my tax filing, but my CA recommended correcting the PAN details to avoid possible issues with future KYC checks and financial transactions.
Requirements can vary depending on the institution, so it's worth checking with the organizations where your PAN is already registered.
