Punjab National Bank NRI Account: Eligibility and Documents

Hi everyone,

I am planning to open a Punjab National Bank NRI account because I still have some financial commitments in India and would prefer to maintain a separate account for my NRI transactions.

I have been living in the US for the last few years and recently started looking into PNB's NRI banking options. I understand that NRIs can open different types of accounts, including NRE and NRO accounts, but I am a little confused about which one would be suitable for my situation.

My main concern at the moment is the eligibility and documents required for a PNB NRI account.

I have my Indian passport, valid US visa/status documentation, US driver's licence and a US bank account. I also have an Indian address that is still mentioned on some of my documents. I'm not sure whether PNB will require separate proof of my overseas address and Indian address.

I also noticed that PNB has an online NRI account-opening facility, so I am wondering whether I actually need to visit a PNB branch in India. I may be travelling to India later this year, but I would prefer to complete the process remotely if possible.

For those who have recently opened a PNB NRI account, what documents did you actually submit? Did you need to get your passport and signatures attested by an Indian Consulate, notary or bank?

Also, did PNB ask for a tax identification number or overseas tax-residency proof?

I'd especially appreciate experiences from NRIs living in the USA, UK, Canada or UAE, since document requirements may differ depending on where you live.

I recently went through the PNB NRI account-opening process and found the distinction between NRE and NRO more important than I initially expected.

If your main requirement is to bring overseas earnings into India and maintain them in rupees, an NRE account may be what you're looking for. PNB also offers FCNR(B) accounts for certain foreign-currency deposits.

An NRO account, on the other hand, is generally used for legitimate rupee transactions in India. So someone receiving rental income, pension, or other Indian-source funds may need to consider an NRO account.

As for documents, I would keep scans of everything ready before starting:

    • Passport
    • Valid visa/work permit or other proof of NRI status
    • Overseas address proof
    • Indian address proof, if requested
    • Recent photographs
    • Tax residency/TIN information
    • Completed NRI account-opening form
    • Overseas bank details, if required
    • Supporting income documents if requested

I wouldn't rely solely on an old checklist found on a forum because banks update their forms and KYC requirements.

PNB currently has an online NRI account-opening route, so you don't necessarily have to be physically present in India just to begin the process. However, there can still be documentation and authentication steps after submitting the online application.

One thing that caused a delay for me was document attestation.

I live in Canada and initially assumed that uploading clear copies of my passport and address proof would be enough. The bank later asked for documents in the required authentication format because I wasn't opening the account by visiting the branch personally.

So I would suggest checking this point before sending your documents.

PNB's NRI documentation guidance distinguishes between proof of identity, proof of NRI/foreign status, Indian address, overseas address, and tax information. Depending on your circumstances, the bank may accept different documents for each category.

For example, an overseas address can potentially be established through documents such as a foreign driving licence, utility bill, bank statement or employment-related document.

Another thing to keep in mind is that OCI/PIO status and NRI status aren't the same thing. If you're an OCI holder, tell the bank exactly what your current status is rather than assuming that an old Indian passport or Indian address will be sufficient.

I would also keep the original documents available. Even if you start the application online, the bank may need to verify documents or request additional information before activating the account.

I opened an NRI account with PNB a while ago, although my documents were submitted from the US.

In my case, the basic set was my passport, visa/status document, overseas address proof, photographs and the account-opening/KYC forms. I also had to provide information relating to my tax residency.

One thing I would recommend is not assuming that your Indian address can replace your overseas address. PNB's NRI document list separately mentions proof of overseas address, and examples include an overseas government ID, employment document, foreign driving licence, utility bill or bank statement.

I used my US driver's licence for the overseas address, which made things fairly straightforward.

There can also be an attestation requirement if you aren't physically visiting the branch. My understanding is that the bank may accept documents authenticated through certain approved channels, but I would check the current instructions before getting anything notarised. It can be frustrating to have everything prepared and then discover that one document wasn't authenticated in the format the bank expected.

Also, decide whether you actually need an NRE or NRO account before submitting the application. They serve different purposes. I originally thought I only needed an NRE account, but because I had income and payments originating in India, an NRO account was more relevant for those transactions.
