I'm an NRI living in California on an H-1B visa, and this will be my first year filing an Income Tax Return (ITR) in India after moving abroad. I still have rental income from my apartment in Bengaluru, along with interest from my NRO account. Since my tax situation is a bit more complicated than before, I'm thinking of hiring a Chartered Accountant (CA) instead of filing everything myself.
The problem is that there are so many firms offering NRI income tax e-filing services that I'm not sure how to choose the right one. Some advertise very low prices, while others claim to specialize in DTAA, foreign income reporting, and TDS refunds. It's difficult to know what actually matters.
For those who have worked with a CA for NRI income tax filing, what did you look for before hiring them? Did you choose someone local in India, or does location not really matter if everything is handled online?
I'd also like to know whether your CA helped with reviewing Form 26AS, AIS, TIS, rental income calculations, or claiming benefits under the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA). Were they responsive if the Income Tax Department requested clarification after filing?
I'm looking for genuine experiences rather than recommendations for any particular firm. I know every case is different, and tax rules can change, so I'd appreciate hearing what factors helped you make the right choice.
My experience was a little different. I'm based in the UK and initially hired a general tax consultant because they were inexpensive. Unfortunately, they weren't familiar with NRI-specific provisions, so I had to get my return revised after discovering that some income had been reported incorrectly.
Since then, I always ask whether the CA regularly handles NRI clients and understands DTAA provisions, capital gains, and property-related taxation. I also check how quickly they respond to emails because time zone differences can make communication difficult.
The location of the CA hasn't mattered much for me because everything—from document sharing to e-verification—has been completed online.
I live in Toronto and have been filing taxes in India as an NRI for the last four years. The biggest thing I looked for wasn't the fee—it was whether the CA had experience handling NRI returns specifically.
During our first discussion, I asked questions about DTAA, rental income, TDS on property, and foreign bank reporting. The CA explained how these applied to my situation instead of giving generic answers. That gave me more confidence than simply seeing good online reviews.
Another thing I appreciated was that they shared a document checklist upfront and reviewed Form 26AS and AIS before preparing my return. Last year there was a mismatch in my TDS entries, and we corrected it before filing, which probably saved time later.

I'm an NRI in Singapore, and what helped me most was scheduling a short consultation before deciding. I prepared a list of questions about my salary abroad, Indian mutual funds, and bank accounts to see whether the CA understood my situation.
I also asked what would happen if the Income Tax Department later issued a notice or requested additional information. Some professionals included post-filing support, while others charged separately, so it was useful to clarify that in advance.
Based on my experience, choosing someone who communicates clearly and explains the filing process is just as important as technical knowledge.
