I recently became a non-resident and am looking at Indian banks for managing my Indian income and overseas earnings. I came across Indian Bank and wanted to know whether it provides both NRE and NRO accounts.
I mainly want to understand whether I can maintain an NRE account for money transferred from abroad and an NRO account for Indian-source income such as rent, dividends, or other local receipts.
Also, are there any major differences in how Indian Bank handles these two accounts? I am particularly interested in:
I would prefer information based on Indian Bank's current rules rather than older NRI banking information.
I checked Indian Bank's current deposit policy, and both accounts are clearly covered.
The policy states that NRO accounts may be maintained by persons resident outside India for bona fide transactions denominated in Indian rupees. For NRE accounts, Indian Bank states that NRIs and PIOs can open and maintain the account, subject to applicable conditions.
Indian Bank also offers NRE savings products. For example, its IND Plus NRE Savings Bank Account is specifically listed as an NRE savings account.
So, if you're comparing Indian Bank for NRI banking, both NRE and NRO options are available, but the account you need depends on your circumstances.
Yes, Indian Bank does offer both NRE and NRO accounts. Its current deposit policy lists Non-Resident (External) Rupee (NRE) accounts as well as Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) accounts. Indian Bank also has dedicated NRI banking and foreign-exchange services.
The two accounts serve different purposes. An NRE account is generally used for managing income or funds transferred from outside India, while an NRO account is generally used for legitimate Indian-rupee transactions and income arising in India.
If you are an OCI holder, don't assume that simply having an OCI card determines your account type. Your FEMA residential status and the nature of your funds are important.

One thing that confused me initially was thinking NRE and NRO were simply two versions of the same account. They aren't.
An NRE account is maintained in Indian rupees and is generally associated with funds brought into India from abroad. An NRO account is generally used for Indian-source income and other permitted rupee transactions.
If you have both overseas income and income in India, you may have a reason to maintain both accounts. However, the tax treatment, repatriation rules and permitted transactions can differ, so I would check the current bank terms before moving substantial funds.
Indian Bank also provides an NRI customer onboarding portal for account-related requests, including certain NRI account services and conversion of resident accounts to NRO.
