I am an NRI living outside India and want to send money to my family and maintain funds in my Indian bank account. I currently have an account with Indian Bank and want to know whether I can receive money from abroad through the bank.

Can NRIs send money directly to an Indian Bank NRE or NRO account through an international bank transfer?

I am mainly looking for the current process and any important FEMA/RBI rules I should be aware of.

One thing worth checking is whether you're sending money to your own Indian Bank account or to another person's account.

For your own account, you would generally provide the receiving account details and use an approved international remittance/banking channel. The bank or remittance provider may request information about the sender, beneficiary, purpose of remittance and source of funds depending on the transaction.

Also, don't confuse the ability to send money into India with the rules for sending money back out of India. Inward remittances and NRO repatriation are governed by different rules.

I use the distinction between NRE and NRO as the main starting point.

NRE account: Inward remittances from outside India are permitted credits, and the funds retain their repatriable character subject to applicable rules.

NRO account: Inward remittances from outside India are also permitted, along with legitimate dues in India and other permitted credits. NRO balances have different repatriation rules. RBI currently provides for eligible NRI/PIO remittances from NRO balances up to USD 1 million per financial year, subject to the applicable conditions.

So an NRI can send money to India through Indian Bank, but the account into which the money is credited matters.

Yes, NRIs can send money to India through Indian Bank using permitted banking channels. RBI's guidance allows inward remittances from outside India to be credited to NRE and NRO accounts, subject to the applicable account rules.

If you're sending your own overseas earnings to India, an NRE account is commonly used for eligible foreign-sourced funds. An NRO account can also receive inward remittances, along with permitted Indian-source income.

The exact process can depend on the country you're sending from, the remittance provider, the currency and Indian Bank's current requirements.
