How Long Does DTAA Verification Take?

I am an NRI and recently submitted documents for claiming DTAA benefits on my income from India. I have a Tax Residency Certificate from my country of residence and have also completed the required declaration on the Indian income-tax portal.

I am now waiting for the DTAA verification/processing to be completed. I could not find a clear timeline for how long this normally takes.

Some websites mention a few days, while others say it can take several weeks depending on whether the Income Tax Department needs to verify the documents.

I am mainly trying to understand whether there is an official processing time for DTAA verification or whether it depends on the type of claim.

My Indian income is subject to TDS, so the timing matters because I want to make sure the applicable DTAA benefit is considered correctly.

For people who have recently claimed DTAA benefits, how long did the verification take for you? Did the status change automatically after filing the form, or did you have to contact the Income Tax Department?

Also, does having a valid TRC make the process faster, or can the department still ask for additional information?

I would be careful about comparing DTAA verification with ITR processing.

    They are different stages.

If you are claiming foreign tax credit while filing an Indian ITR, there are separate requirements for reporting foreign income and claiming the credit. Form 67 is relevant to foreign tax credit claims by eligible taxpayers; it isn't simply a universal “DTAA verification form.”

For a non-resident receiving Indian income, the treaty claim can instead involve the TRC and the applicable declaration/documentation.

So if someone tells you “DTAA verification always takes 7 days” or “30 days,” I would ask them what exact process they are referring to. I have not seen a general official timeline that applies to every DTAA claim.

In my case, the confusing part was the word verification.

I initially thought the Income Tax Department manually verifies every DTAA declaration before the benefit can be used. That isn't necessarily how every situation works.

For a non-resident claiming treaty relief, the Income Tax Department requires evidence of tax residence. The department's guidance says a non-resident seeking DTAA relief needs a residence certificate from the foreign country's government, with the prescribed additional information where applicable.

So having a valid TRC and providing the required information is important, but I wouldn't rely on an unofficial processing-time estimate.

If the claim is connected to TDS, the practical timing can also depend on the Indian payer, deductor, TDS return and whether the treaty documentation was accepted for the particular payment.

I don't think there is one standard timeline for all DTAA claims.

When I was researching this, I found that the first thing to distinguish is the TRC from the Indian DTAA declaration. The TRC is issued by the tax authority of the country where you are tax resident. The Indian tax process then requires the relevant information to support the treaty claim.

Under the current 2026 framework, Form 41 is the self-declaration used by non-residents seeking DTAA benefits in the specified circumstances. It replaced the earlier Form 10F framework.

So I would not assume that submitting the form means there will necessarily be a separate “DTAA verification completed” notification within a fixed number of days.

If your TDS deduction is the immediate concern, I would also check whether the payer has accepted the treaty documentation rather than waiting only for a portal status.
