Is Internet and Mobile Banking Available for NRI Accounts?

I recently opened an NRE/NRO account and live outside India, so visiting the bank branch regularly isn't practical for me.

I wanted to know whether NRI account holders can use internet banking and mobile banking just like resident customers.

Specifically, I would like to know whether I can:

  • Check my NRE/NRO account balance online
  • Download account statements
  • Transfer money between my accounts
  • Make NEFT/IMPS/RTGS transfers
  • Add or manage beneficiaries
  • Receive transaction alerts
  • Update my registered mobile number or email
  • Use mobile banking while living outside India
  • Manage both NRE and NRO accounts through the same online banking facility

I am particularly interested in Indian Bank because I am considering opening an NRE/NRO account there. Are there any additional requirements for NRI customers using online banking from overseas?

One thing I would check before travelling abroad is whether the mobile number registered with the bank will continue to work overseas.

If the bank uses OTP-based authentication, losing access to the registered number can make online banking difficult. It is also worth keeping your email address updated.

For security, don't share your internet-banking password, MPIN, OTP or UPI PIN with anyone. Indian Bank specifically warns customers against sharing such credentials.

I have an NRI account and the main advantage is that I don't need to visit India every time I want to check the account.

Typical online banking functions can include:

    • Viewing balances and transactions
    • Downloading statements
    • Transferring funds
    • Managing beneficiaries
    • Making permitted bill payments
    • Checking deposits
    • Receiving transaction notifications

However, some NRI-specific requests may still require additional documentation or a separate service request.

Indian Bank's current NRI customer portal specifically allows existing customers to submit certain requests online, including KYC updates, conversion of a resident account to NRO, account grouping, and updating email/mobile details.

Yes, NRI customers can generally use digital banking facilities, but the exact features depend on the bank and account arrangement.

For Indian Bank, the bank provides mobile banking and net banking facilities as part of its digital banking services. Its digital banking information also includes services such as account access and online transactions.

If you're outside India, make sure your registered mobile number and email address are up to date because banks may use them for authentication, transaction alerts and service requests.
