How Long Does PAN Card Delivery Take Abroad?

I’m an NRI living in the USA and recently applied for a PAN card using my foreign address as the communication address. My application has been processed, but I’m mainly trying to understand how long the physical PAN card delivery abroad normally takes.

I selected the option to receive the physical PAN card at my overseas address. I know that getting a PAN number and receiving the physical card are two different things, so I’m wondering whether the delivery timeline starts only after the PAN is issued.

I’ve seen different timelines online, ranging from two weeks to a month or more for overseas delivery. Some people also say the e-PAN arrives much earlier than the physical card.

For anyone who has recently applied for an NRI PAN card from the USA, UK, Canada, Australia or another country, how long did it take for the physical PAN card to arrive?

Did you receive the e-PAN first? Was there a separate tracking number for the physical card?

I’m using a foreign communication address, so I’d also like to know whether international courier/postal delivery can add significant time.

Would appreciate recent experiences, especially from people who applied under the current 2026 PAN rules.

I think the key distinction is between PAN processing and physical card delivery.

Protean currently says that normally about two weeks are required to process the application and dispatch the PAN card when the application is complete and in order.

That doesn't necessarily mean an overseas applicant will physically receive the card in two weeks.

If you selected only e-PAN, there won't be a physical card dispatched. If you selected a physical PAN card and provided a foreign communication address, the card is dispatched internationally.

I'd check the PAN application status first and confirm that the card has actually been dispatched. If it has been dispatched and there is a tracking reference, use that to follow the delivery rather than counting from the original application date.

I applied from Canada and had a similar experience.

The e-PAN was much more useful for me because I needed the PAN number before the physical card arrived. The physical card came later through international delivery.

One thing that surprised me was the higher fee for overseas physical delivery. The current Protean fee information lists ₹862 plus applicable tax for physical PAN dispatch outside India for certain application modes, compared with a much lower domestic dispatch fee.

The exact amount can depend on how the application was submitted, so I would check the current fee displayed during the application.

For delivery time, I wouldn't treat a fixed number of days as guaranteed because international delivery depends on the destination and postal/courier process.

My experience was that the e-PAN arrived before the physical card.

I applied from the UK and selected physical PAN delivery to my overseas address. The PAN itself was processed first, and I received the e-PAN by email before the physical card was delivered.

The physical card took additional time because it had to be dispatched outside India. I wouldn't compare its delivery time with someone receiving a PAN at an Indian address.

Protean's current information says applications in order are normally processed and dispatched within about two weeks, but overseas physical delivery is a separate part of the process.

So if the PAN has already been issued but the card hasn't arrived yet, I wouldn't necessarily assume there is a problem.
